ID unknown with red tips??

Anyone have any ideas as to what variety this one could be? Its the only one I have that has red on the terminal bud (and forming brebas). I bought it at a local nursery a couple years ago and it wasn't labelled. I haven't had any fruit yet from it but will this year by the looks of it. I called the nursery and they said from what they were told by the grower it was an italian fig with red centre (if that helps narrow the possibilities lol). I wondered also if the red was from the cool nights in the greenhouse when it was breaking dormancy and not indicative of a variety trait. Although it is the only one that did this.

At this stage ,it is  not possible to ID.
When it fruits ripe fruits ,then it will be possible.
All I wish for you ,is that the plant is parthenocarpic(self fruitfull).
Because in Italy, there are ,self frt,and many others, needing pollination by fig wasp.
Your plant, judging by the red buds,is a fig, having, Ficus palmata genes.

Thanks Herman I'll post pics later on hopefully with its ripe fruit :)

I don't know what it is, but it sure is pretty!

Great photography too!

Here are some updated pictures... hopefully someone can recognize this one...

Here is a breba that just swelled and turn colour just in the last 3 days. Its about the size of a ping pong ball

I will update again once fig fully ripens...   anyone have any ideas let me know :)

It has a main crop, good sign, let us know how the breba tastes. I do not know what variety it is but the experienced will have a lot more to go on. Red tips, leaf pattern. breba and color and now main crop. Good going.

Here is the fig...

And cut in half...

It was a nice tender skinned fig... I think one of the sweetest ones I've tried so far in my limited tasting of figs. Some crunch..nice and juicy. I would eat a lot of these figs. My wife also loved it. Looking forward to the main crop figs on this one.

Hi Tyler, it looks like you have a Sicilian red type. There are several different varieties to compare, Sal's Corleone, Enrico, Vincenzo, Weeping Black, Martin's Unk, Pan e Vino Dark, Tatnall Red, Sicilian Red, Sicilian Black JR... Some are different some probably the same. Give the next one more time to ripen and you will be rewarded.

Hi Brent.. thanks for the suggestions, I will look into those. I do have Vincenzo and Sicilian Red that have differences in the figs than this one but I will research the others to see if there are similarities.

Yes I do have an issue letting figs ripen to that shriveled stage.... in that I just can't force myself to leave it alone once I know its edible for fear of losing it lol. Hopefully once my collection of plants starts to produce a lot of figs I will have more patience. :)

Question though... will a fig ripen more if picked and left on the counter or do they have to shrivel up on the tree?

Tyler

It needs to be left on the tree to ripen.

That list I made up is not complete. Nailing down the variety will be very tough. Tatnall Red is one that I found and could not figure out...

Well I exercised more restraint on the next breba that ripened. This time I waited until the eye was pointing to the ground and a skin showed a split. I could definitely see a difference in the interior. I think I still could have waited a day or 2 more for even more flavour though. One of these times I will have the patience lol. It was still very good to eat.

Tyler,

That's a really beautiful beginning and end stage fig pictures. What a beauty.
I see the interior is not red , as the nursery had described to you.
How was the taste? The sweetness on scale of 1-10, any acidity (berry flavor, etc...) and aroma?

Please give us some more information, it looks nice.

Aaron these were the brebas so I wonder if the main crops might have different interiors. I have a few that hopefully will be ripening over the next month. I am terrible at describing taste but I don't recall much acidity. It was quite sweet.. I'd say 8 or 9 sweetness?? but then I am a novice at tasting fresh figs and still learning to wait long enough before picking lol. The skin was very thin... I would say it was a combination of melon and berry taste.. hard to pin point.

Tyler

Good info, very descriptive. No formation of main crop?

Waynea yes there are some main crop figs on it now.. just not near ripening yet. The last picture in my post#5 shows a main crop.

May have to greenhouse it for the main crop, they look nice.
