Ideas for potted trees in 7a that produce early figs

Indeed! I am looking for a type of tree that will produce figs earlier in the season. In zone 7a on Long Island in New York ALL my trees figs ripen with the first three weeks of September. It's great time of year but the only time of year. I am looking for fig trees that will produce earlier than that. I have heard that desert king will produce earlier although it won't survive outside in my zone (grumble) and Florea will ripen earlier also so I got those two types.
What else is there?
That being said I would greatly prefer trees that produce without much work on my part. i find myself with less and less time with a growing family. I will not be able sit outside and read french poetry to this thing. it's going to get 8 hours of sun, pine bark, vermiculite, peat moss, some fertilizer and water.
Thanks again! Everyone hear has been very helpful

Hi Michael,
With 8 hours of sun and being in zone 7 at least some of your figs should ripen earlier than September. I wonder why it is not happening.
People grow Desert King inground in Canada (with some protection, I assume. The Canadian members who do probably will verify) so You should be able to do it easily.

It sounds like your growing in container with the mention of your mix above. Do you have some place to store the container in the winter (shed/garage)? I am now growing a desert king and i am also on long island, i plan on putting it in my attached garage and am not worried about it, i also wanted early crop(breba). Whereabouts on LI are you?

Sorry guys once I got a Breba crop on my Chicago hardy. Other than that nothing before maybe late August. Local winters have been beyond rediculous as everybody knows with everything dying back to the roots. Most of my trees are the same size as last year due to die back. Some are way smaller. These are planted in ground. Yes I bring all my potted stuff with the mixture above into the attached garage

Hi happychicken,
you'll be looking for strains with a good breba crop.
Brebas are ripening now here, when my main crops show up beginning of September or later. I'm in Zone7 too.
I'm still looking myself for a strain with a good breba crop.
So far Dalmatie/Tena/Adriatic and the real BT are my best brebas producer ... But I wish they would produce more brebas. I have some other strains but I'm still raising them.
I have another unknown that makes lots of brebas ... but they drop. I'm left with 10 and they have started to swollen .
Keep me posted if you find a strain producing lots of brebas.

Malta Black ripens for me in mid August and is cold hardy.

English Brown Turkey does well for me here in Staten Island. 2 year old tree in 20 gallon pot. Got about a dozen ripe breba off her this year and there's probably 50 or more main crop hanging right now. Delicious!

I have two Malta blacks they are small so no figs yet. Great to hear mid August though!
Do the English brown turkey figs taste good?

For me in 7a these seem to be early-to-mid season varieties that reliably produce: Florea (the earliest for me), Improved Celeste, Ronde de Bordeaux, Bari, Violette de Bordeaux, Mt. Etna types, Malta Black, Atreano.  These should all produce in ground in zone 7a even after freezing to the ground with the possible exception of Atreano.  I'm tempted to add Adriatic JH to the list but it seems to ripen mid-to-late season. San Pedro types (Desert King, Filacciano Bianco, etc) would need to only be grown in containers unless we go back to having mild winters!

Some of the figs you have (Florea, MBvs, Atreano) should start producing quite early once they get established. Depending where your located on LI, you might be experiencing a little coastal cooling that could somewhat delay the ripening time.  However you might look into Italian Honey/ Lattarula. It has an early breba crop that goes right into the main crop. DK is another variety that's noted for an early breba. Varieties grown for breba may require winter protection or otherwise the crop could be lost.

Good stuff here! Thanks If anyone has a lattarula or vdb to sell on LI let me know. I bought a panache too that looks cool.
