If you air layer the main trunk...

If you air layer the main trunk of a tall skinny tree to hopefully make it into two trees, will you lose the figs that are growing at the top?  Also, when is the best time to airlayer in the Northeast (I'm in zone 6A)

Thanks!

I did this last year on a Sweet George.  I girdled the tree and used a large nursery pot irrigating as needed, depending on the weather, that could have been twice a day.  I left it for 2 months before even peaking to see if there was roots, once I looked, I was very happy to see a pot filled with roots.  I cut the air layer off, placed it in morning sun only and slowly increased the sun every couple days.  The new tree never showed any signs of stress nor did it loose a single fig during the process.  I was very happy to be able to gift the tree with figs intact.

That's just what I wanted to hear!  Thanks so much :)

Best of luck with it, be patient.

Did it to a plum tree worked good.
