If you could only have 5 varieties of figs...

what would they be and if you have a why (as opposed to just wanting them), tell us.  I've started my orchard with a planted in the wrong place Celeste, a brand new LSU purple, and I seem to want everything I see but know that is impractical, hence my question.

I cannot assume your location and temperature zone but so far for my northern zone 5 I currently rely on my Marseilles VS Black, Sal, Natalina, Hardy Chicago and Celeste while the other plants are in the process of maturing and it will not be fair to compare with the above yet because of maturity difference.

I'm just getting started with varieties other than what was available locally, so I'm hoping others will respond, and I'm taking notes.

Thanks Ottawan.  I have the others now but I will add the Sal and Natalina.

I have a Brown Turkey, LSU, and Italian Honey fig that have been in ground for years now and are solid producers, and I have over 20 other varieties started, but I am putting together the wish list for next year and hope others will make good suggestions.

Good question Ireilly.  Thanks.

I'm in Zone 8 Ottawan.  Keep forgetting to add that when I post.  I think I need something yellow.  What's a good yellow fig?  For zone 8?

My other yellow (sometimes called white or green) have not fruited yet because of age, however, I am satisfied with Brunswick (yellow) at its early age. Also, the plant looks so pretty in the landscape because of its leaves..

Ireiley, my fiance asked me the same question last summer why do you need so many fig plants, I then rolled my eyes and said why do you need so many shoes? Why do I want so many? Because I want variantion in flavour size etc. Impractical yes specially since I live in a condo but I am extremely happy with what I have and will manage to keep as many as I can for as long as I can.
