I'M AFRAID TO OPEN THE BOX.

On July 29, in a moment of supreme impatience and perhaps stupidity, I placed an order for not one but two Panache Tiger fig trees from the opposite coast.

They were shipped July 29, with an estimated arrival date of Aug 4 which is tomorrow
I KNOW I should have waited until the fall to order them, but thety looked so nice and full of figs that I was afraid that they would sell out, and I.REALLY wanted to see them grow and ripen this year.
I figured I would put one on the Patio, near the Grow lights and one on the roof, thinking either one would be enough to ripen those figs.
The seller was nice and mentioned i might lose half of the figs and/or leaves, but I didn't care. the shipping on them was nearly the price of the trees, but i didn't care.
Now that the delivery date is less than a day, I am really starting to worry.
5  full days without water or sun, bouncing around in a truck cross country, I'm afraid to open the boxes.
i am excited to see/get them but at the same time I feel like Brad Pitt in that movie Seven... where he says" What's in the Box ??? "
Did I really mess up in getting them shipped now?
Be honest please, I can take it.
 Nick.

Your only good answer is in the box. Need a pocketknife?

If that's that the pic of them, I'd say you did just fine. Plus if you have them on the roof where its very warm, I would say you'll have a very tasty fig. You will be happy with your choice.

You will likely lose some leaves and figs, but no you didn't do wrong. I also just got a new fig delivered from Bass and I have shipped trees in warm weather myself. Of course I am refering to young trees, but I have found that if they are packed properly, figs usually take the shipping very well. The real question for you will be in the fall when you have to find room for yet 2 more trees, then you will know if you did the right thing or not.

enjoy them....if not this year so in many years to come

Nick,
dont worry they will not die. I shipped recently priority mail took 3 days plants were small and made it fine in 95 degree heat during shipment.

If you loose leaves even many it still will be fine long as it was healthy to begin with.
I always put my received plants in shade at first as well.
Fig plants are very forgiving.

I just dread opening the box and seeing figs that have fallen off sitting on the bottom of the box.  I also need to intercept the UPS guy before my mom sees them.

The last thing I need is for her to see the large boxs and know I have added to the collection.
she doesn't go up to the roof so she has no idea how many are up there
She thinks one is too many.
My plan is to hide the boxes and sneak them up there after she goes to sleep....
I'm so bad....

Funny...

You may be a fig nut if ... you're hiding the evidence of your addiction from your mama!

Nick  i was reading some older post .
Now take this in a light way .

You had 15 on roof now adding a few more .
My thinking soon your Mom may ask why you spend so much time up there.
So think ahead now for a answer .   ; )

and when that happens and you hide the truth

Then go see "Father Luigi" on following Sunday
" Bless me Father for i have Sinned"

What are your sins my son

You bow your head in shame (not really) but looks the part in confessional
You confess them to him -probably the minor ones .   ; )

Smileing Father (not that you can see his face)
"Son for your penance 5 Hail a Mary's and bring me all your fig tree's"

Nick,

Bud, don't worry!  I hid a smoker from my wife for 3 years before I told her about it.  Of course I used it here - my fellow office workers like it here also as they get bbq ribs now and then.  There is a fly rod and reel or two or three that she doesn't know about either.

I have it down to a science.

I have it all planed out.
I time my "visits" to when she's having breakfast, watching her " stories "  or sleeping.
Luckily I can bypass her apt and go directly to the roof without her seeing me.
When I am up there I can water and look over the figs in 7 Minutes flat.
Tip-toeing the whole time, quiet as a mouse.

Nick.

BTW  I'm 47.

Just do aaaat

this is too funny nick. next thing you will need to dress up like the cable guy or the roof/telephone repair dude....best of luck

I had ordered 3 fig trees and Canada post went on Strike, they were in a box for about 14 days no water not sure what conditions they were kept in but they are all alive and growing well now so I would say you are fine.

Thanks.

That makes me feel that much better.
the funniest thing is, the roof area is not that high from the ground.
Every now and then my mom looks out the window and sees people on the street either looking up or pointing or taking pics of the Figs on the roof which they can see from street level.
Guess seeing Fig trees on a roof is a pretty uncommon site.
She just shakes her head.
The building has two roofs,
The one I use is the roof of my parents area, which I guess can be called the Terrence of the Vacant apt  Sister once lived there and recently moved out ) above her.with another roof above that apt.
My master plan is to build an arbor up there for my Grapes ( Concorde and Merlot )
and spread out the remaining 5 or 6 fig trees..
There is a nice view up there and I can see part of Manhattan on one side
and elevated train tracks and the Verrazano bridge  on the other.

Nothing like those views of the Verrazano.

Love it every time I go back to Bay Ridge.
