Im Curious About This

Saw this in store and looked at it i said hmm why not i had 3.78 to throw away. Its some sort of gel in cup here is what it says on package in my words basically.

Propagar plantas y esquejes de tallo suave es facil con gelroot2.
Gelroot2 MR es un enraizador transparente.

ok i was funning there but its also in spanish and NO no im not makeing fun of the spanish folks im married to a gal from Spain.  ; )

Basically what it says is cut a healthy stem just below a leaf node about 5 inches long and make a hole in foil with pencil or pen and insert it into the gel removing lower leaves, only a few small leaves are necessary.Do not remove the foil because it minimizes evaporation.
It says you can insert up to 3 cutting into each cell. Note: do not use rooting hormone powder because it hinders gelroot2 performance.
Hmm after taking viagra if you start to see blurry or -- ok ok i wont go there
Goes on to say place the complete unit in a light warm spot making sure its out of direct sunlight.
When a well developed root system forms you can transplant your cuttings into potting soil.Cut the foil surrounding the cutting and carefully remove it from the gel . Place the whole leaf stalk into potting soil and firm the soil around it. Its not necessary to remove any gel that sticks to the roots before transplanting into the soil.
It does say on carton for softwood cuttings -sterile non toxic. But im gonna try it on 1 hardwood dormant stick and on softwood during the season for pure fun.

Well i enjoy trying new things sometimes and when i saw this i thought why not try a hard stick of fig plant one that i cut from my dormant plant and also try one during the growing season a green softwood cutting perhaps off one of my fig plants for pure fun of perhaps watching someting grow.

Yes yes i know i can propagate fig plants other ways and i have , this would be expensive way but 3.78 gives me some fun plus im just plain curious what will happen so i spent the money to try it i wont miss a meal because of it.

Martin, I laughed when i started reading your post, I wondered what the hell? Of course I knew it was spanish, anyways, interesting, please to keep us posted on the progress.  Thanks for the little chuckle I got, I needed that.

Since it`s clear you can see your fig cutting progress every day :)

Hey Martin my mother roots her roses with that gel every year and I have rooted softwood Strawberry guava with that gel as well I personally have not tried rooting figs but dont see why it wouldn't work. Good luck and let us know the outcome.

Martin that looks neat keep us posted with Pics pics and more pics
Almost forgot keep posting pictures
Sal

May I ask where you found this? I haven't seen it before and would like to give it a try on a few things.

Sure GoodDaughter
I found it at Menards indoors not outside in there yard. It was on shelf in a  section where they sell stuff for plants, pots, fertilizer, small bags of potting soil etc.
I go to Menards often when i need something for the house like electrical ,furnace filters , etc .
But i always venture off to the garden section just to look around, i never saw this stuff before  including other stores until my last trip or i probably would have tried it before out of curiosity.

Thanks Sal !

Today Feb 10th i used both of those gel rooter cup , i cut 2 sticks from Vdb plant in garage.
Just curious to see what will happen .
Im going to buy another pack i hope they only had a few on there shelf at Menards to keep for the season and cut some fresh growth more and try that way also to see what happens as im curious.
Also i like this bin also bought at same joint because it can fit a plant up to 18 inches tall , last season i propagated some Santa Cruz  long sticks from UcDavis and this would have came in handy at the time.

Martin,
I wonder if this gel is reusable...

Not sure, incorparated into the gel is some sort of rooting hormone 125ml.
Im thinking once a person roots a plant and gently pulls it out according to the directions the rooting hormone is weaker or mostly used by the plant.
I have my doubts about my whirl at this with the fig sticks, but im going to try with new cup and newly emerged green stem once it reaches several inches come the season to see what happens. This is not something i would normally do but im just curious and will post results good or bad with the ones pictured above and new ones come the time i stick them in new cups this upcoming season.

Update 24 hrs later since VdB were put in gel cups i have noticed the little bumps have just started. Good or bad i will update as time goes by what happens, it always fun for me to try different things with fig plants in general.
Enjoy

Here you go.
Stem cells emerging. Roots will follow, I'm sure...

If I recall correctly, you tried similar gel last year too. Am I confusing it with some other experiment?

Hi Akram
you have a good memory yes i did use a gel last season called Clonex Red made for hardwood cuttings. That one is a little different its not in a cup , it basically a red thinner gel .You pour out what you need and dip your stick into it and then insert into your medium weather that be a growing mix or
s moss or wrapped and put into baggie. I used it on 2 VdBs and 1 Santa Cruz all rooted in time . The 2 Vdbs eventually died, the santa cruz grew into a nice plant. here are the links to those.

I like to try different things as im curious and it keeps me interested by not doing the same thing over and over again but thats just me plus its fun. So now i do something different again this season , i found a little more room for plants (sigh)but i will thin more plants out in time like last season when i got rid of several plants.

Looked at these again today and wont bore anyone with same pictures if nothing really changes.

I did notice on the smaller cutting bubbles forming ON the stick itself toward the bottom of it.
The thicker cutting looks the same as yesterday.

But as mentioned i still have my doubts about these sticks, and for me it will interesting to see what this gel cup stuff will do with an emerging shoot several inches long when i try come fig season.

Martin,
I stoped by to Menard's today,I couldn't`t find that rooting gel .  I may need to go to other Menard's they must be in the " garden" isle right?

Yes they are same isle as the small boxes of mircale grow garnular stuff but if you went to the Menards off 159th and Harlem i just bought there last 2 they had to mess around with this summer with newer growth off the plants.

No Menard's stores here. Maybe I can find something similar online. Thanks!

Please i cannot stress enough do not go and spend your hard earn money because i try it this stuff. I only do this for fun and show what happens in my home i dont push any of the way i do thinks and never will. Im no expert on fig plants at all including propagating. With that said its much less expensive to get a light mix of perlite and potting soil 70/30 or 80/20 pre wet it and stick stick in it useing a cover for a dome or stick inside a bin or whatever method works for you and have a excellent chance of getting roots.
I just get bored of doing same thing over again and like to try new things here and there and post my results here its not meant to be this is a good way it works if i get roots in paper towel or cup or rooting hormones or any other way. Heck i like to get a stick and poke it in soil under canopy of 1 of my trees for shade and keep that spot moist and lots of times get it to root, or take a sucker down at soil level and fasten it down with a J hook under soil and keep it moist and get a plant. See what im trying to say is there are many ways to get a rooted plant that are free and no cost, i just dont want you to spend money on top of money following me in doing so.
Reason i post this now is because i have seen people mention certain ways of doing propagating then all of a sudden good folks with there hard earned money go and buy everything they need because they think its the best way i dont want to be held into that catagory.
So please take that into consideration this is only me having fun posting what i like to try .  ; )
I hope my words come to you in a non harsh way as they are meant to be kind.

Today in 3rd day now both cups have many bubbles attached to the sticks.
So the second stick now has a bunch of bubbles that are on the stick as i view it with a jewelers loupe and if any roots should start i will be able to see them when they first pop with the loupe.
Something is clearly happening but dont know if its for the good or the bad.
Still have my doubt but time will tell.
Tomorrow perhaps i show the bubbles pictures.

Martin, maybe they're oxygen bubbles, which would be good for root formation. I hope this works. Am anxious to see.Fun project.

Martin, I just wanted to give it a try too, just out of curiosity. I understand you're just exprimenting.  I like to try new things on occasion and who knows, maybe it might end up working. I couldn't afford to spend much experimenting, but sometimes it's still fun.

I'll be checking back to see how your experiment goes.

4 Days since trying this stuff.  Here are a few pictures of 1 stick with what appears to be some sort of bubbles. They are on both of the sticks i have tried. This is 2 pictures of 1 of the sticks. Some bubbles are attached some are floating in cup.

started to noticed this yesterday 9 days since in cup , took picture today 10th day not to much but i did notice off one of the little bumps is doing a little something,a root just barely starting to grow outwards observing it with a jewlers loupe. I try to capture it with camera picture. The other stick is still the same.
Ignore time stamp in picture its off again as kids also use camera.

Martin,
Those roots look nice and strong. The bubbles are gone. I wonder where the gas causing bubbles was coming from.
