I'm out of room

A dozen plus fat figs plants that have outgrown the space I have under the grow shelves I built.
Now I have a whole bunch of new cuttings to grow out until in the basement until April.

Tomorrow I'm buying another fluorescent fixture from HD to hang from the ceiling somewhere down there.

I'm out of space and I haven't even planted my tomatoes, egg plant, peppers or anything for the garden yet this year.

Discus...

Move to CA. Rich. We don't have basements.

Get rid of the white types and come to the dark side.

Whats resulted from my fig collecting has been a couple groups of figs

1) From Jersey fig hunting - Italian dark, purple and green
2) French purple and green
3) Italian various
4) Greek unk

My Bataglia and Negronne (BM) from last year were sooo good I can't think of choosing between them

We like purple and green figs. Is there something wrong with us?

: )

Rich,

I like all figs as well. There is likely something wrong with all of us:}

I still have 80 cuttings in the fridge, with more coming in, and I'm also out of room in my basement "sweat box". No veggies for me this year.
I thought I'd a killed more by now, but the first round of rooting has been above 80%.
Now what!? Root the rest in a big trough this spring?
I'm grateful for my understanding wife.

I'll take all the white ones Rich... i'll make more space in my backyard and even bedroom if I have to...oh wait...my wife...oops.

I have only tasted a couple of white (green with red pulp) and (green with amber pulp) and they were DELICIOUS.  it is best to plant 3 in one pot than give up on a white.

Hi Rich,

I left NJ last April to move to NC due to an unexpected job relocation.  Before that I live 3 miles from Bill Figs in Flemington.  Are you in that area?  Just curious as I will be back up in NJ to pick up more of my orchid collect and would love to see your set up.  I can't believe how many fig growers were in NJ!!

ran out of room sometime ago, and i'm still rooting. today i received two different cuttings from a member and yesterday another one. in few days, there will come another package.

last few yrs, i kept all the cuttings that were rooted. starting this yr, unless a variety is very special, i'm only keeping best one cutting out of whichever variety. and getting rid of all that duplicates that i don't need. that will help free up about 30 trees. i'll be down to about.. hmm.. no... it won't make any difference. dang it.

We live in Fair Lawn which is about 10 miles west of the GWB. Let me know when you are in the area.

The sickness I have now is that I can spot fig trees in people's yard while driving and even in realestate pictures. There are figs growing all over the place in NJ and NY.

Rich,
I'm right there with you in the loony bin!  Once you know what to look for, the fig trees pop out all over around here.  I've discovered 8 within about 2-3 miles from where I work, and that is just driving along the main road.  Who knows what I'd find if I cruised around the neighborhoods there.
Speaking of cruising the neighborhood, last year I discovered a bunch of trees around the neighborhoods by my house...and then two of them mysteriously vanished!  One was a pretty big, well established tree (thick trunk, pruned to shape), and the other was small and pruned bushy, but obviously well taken care of (e.g. covered for the winter.)  They just vanished!  I wonder if the owners got suspicious of me driving by their house so slowly so often and relocated them just in case!!! ;-)
Do your kids or wife ever ask you why you're making a wrong turn out of the blue...and it is because you spotted a fig tree and want to go around the block to take another look???
Cheers,
Jim

Rich,

Been there, still there.

When my parents came to visit us last summer I took them to Kearny to show them two of the biggest in ground fig trees I had ever seen. Then we did a Tour de Kearny and I showed them all of the other smaller ones I found. We don't even live in Kearny. We live in Fair Lawn and only go to Kearny to shop at a Portuguese grocery store. I need professional help maybe.

Good to hear about the Battaglia Green, Rich. I have a standing order with Fred at RabbitRidge for a 1 gallon this spring/summer. Since I've run out of room, I'm "gifting" it to my brother to grow at his house when it arrives :P  Can't wait for spring so I can move the winter plants into the yard and make space for the new cuttings currently in the fridge.

Rich,

Don't know what your problem is.  Now me, I've got a problem with room.  I'm thinking about pouring another concrete slab in my backyard to make room for this years cuttings and last years growing trees. $$$$$ : (
