I'm quiting

You can come and take all my fig trees. I don't want to grow them anymore.

Why what is the problem?????

Bass

It is not April first yet.......Are you making a trial run?

This IS a JOKE right?

Bass,

I hope you are kidding. If you are, it's not very funny. I hope everything is ok.

You must be kidding us (right)?

Yes sure, there are (cold)  problems growing figs here in the NorthEast.
My own problem is space; both growing and (winter) storing them.
Sometimes, things/effort can become very overwhelming (and I do have nightmares - no kidding) .

Whatever your (sudden) ailment is, I know you as a smart man that can handle stuff.

Please do cheer-up.

Bass,
I hope you mean different than what we read.
You have many other things growing than figs. I hope things are OK and they eventually get OK. Best wishes.

Bass

What is the problem, if you like to speak about it.

George

Sorry, I shouldn't have used the internet when I'm mad.

Today started as a good day and was warm enough to work outside. So I pruned some of my fruit trees then I decided to check on my figs. We had -7°F this winter, so I wanted to make sure they survived the cold being wrapped.
As I uncovered the first tree I saw some of my twigs are green then I finish taking the cover off and the mice have chewed up around the entire tree. I did put Moth balls on one side and they left that alone, but the other side of the tree was chewed up. They even climbed up and chewed the tips. That was one of my favorite figs, the Dark Portuguese. Then I unwrap the other 4 trees and parts of them were chewed off as well.

I posted my first post when I unwrapped my first 3 trees and saw the damage. It made me so mad. This is the second time that this is happened.
After that I unwrapped the others and feel better now.

Ive been there :( I fight rodents eating my trees fall winter and spring... We have three in ground that have been planted 4 years and are about 14 in tall because they get chewed and lopped off almost constantly. Glad your feeling better!

OK we all feel a bit better now. There is still a time tested remedy for that .... "time" itself.
They Will grow again (at least from the roots).

Ok, some of us (including myself) have posted 'while' mad - for some reason

or an other - and much later wished not to have done so - heck some (human) crap does happen....

Overall, I am glad that you are basically ok.

Hurray!

Hell.........I invented posting while I was in the big middle of a genuine Texas Hissy Fit

Been there done that Bass!

Someone once told me to count to a 100 Bass Akwards......Nothing to do with you Bass

HEHE

glad you are feeling better. i worry about mice all the time what with using shredded tree mulch year round. Haven't had a problem yet. May have something to do with the four cats and six dogs I have running around. lol Good luck!

I got a later start that I planned, otherwise I would be in Yuma by now. Glad I checked this one more time before I left. I had the truck all loaded and was finally ready to head out later this afternoon to come pick up your trees. I came close to making the trip for nothing.

Hi Bass.  An understandable frustration.

I just want to say, to you, Jon, Herman (I should not have started with the names because I know I will leave too many out), so let me just say all of you who are leaders in growing figs, what you are doing is vitally important.

This is a fun hobby, but it's not just a hobby folks.  We are very likely in for some tough times for a long time, and figs are the perfect backyard fruit for every family.  They are very healthy also, and that source of nutrition is going to make a big difference for a lot of people in the future.

So even when it's difficult, please keep up the research, and please keep sharing the best cultivars with everyone.

And one more thing Bass.  I have gotten a lot of figs from you, and from many others here.  I am most grateful, but I want you to know that that is also an insurance policy for you.

Even if the @#*&ing mice eat every one of your figs, I have a cutting of that exact fig here my friend, and I will root it and send it to you (along with a box of mouse traps!).

Take care my friend.

John

Thank you Bass....for staying with us & figs.  Likely new sprouts would come from the base, if not you know where to ask. I am sure many folks will help. I have a few of your trees.

Thank you all for the comforting comments.

Jon, I thought I saw Rafed with his trailer down the road already. Coming to haul my trees. If I see you make it all the way here for my figs I would have ended up feeling bad and giving them to you.

I received several phone calls as well asking me if I'm okay...
I have to convince my wife to get a cat again.

I was also with Rafed on the way to Bethlehem PN until when I was driving Raf was checking the forum for any new posts when he saw everything was ok he told me to turn around. When he told me that I turned around I had to call Phil and Marius in Ohio and tell him we weren't picking them up.I'm sure between us four we would've been able to share a lot of your figs.I'm glad everythings ok though whatever I can do to help you out Bass please let me know I can share with you from my collection.God Bless.

Sorry to hear about the rodent problems Bass. The only thing I can think of for future consideration is rat poison. Gotta be some better solutions.

I plan to cover all my larger trees this fall instead of burying them. I will be doing plenty of research before then to consider all my options. I live in the country where there are plenty of field mice as well as voles & moles.

Bass,

The trailer I have has logistic posts. I can put decking what ever height you may need.
Meaning I can load several thousand pots if we want to. Top to bottom end to end.

Cecil knows exactly what I'm talking about.

But too bad, I'm here with a load of onions and yes, It is kick'en!
Got the vents open and you can small them onions a mile away, oooohhweee.
My head's been spinning since Idaho and I'm in Dalton, Ga..

May I suggest a 12ga. shotgun for your problem?
I say we start to make an example with these uninvited rodents!

I'm so very sorry, Bass,
but I think many of us have some of yours trees, so, just let us know, we all will be very happy to help..
And.. if you decide..You always can move to Florida..
Even last 3 nights killing me.. was 40F at night...
But still.. you will don't need to cover figs for a winter...
And I agree.. some kind poison can help..
Olya.

Bass,

Oh, it it just a little (eeek) mouse after all!
If you were a young son of mine, looking for some attention, I'll give you some spanking on your butt.
Heck, your scared off the crap out of most of us.
Some were even contemplating a long distance trucking trip to PA.
Please do not do this again...

George, I know you've done the same thing sometimes and gave up on figs and quickly changed your mind.

Bass,

Sorry to hear about the frustrating varmint issues.   I have had my share of issues with the pesky varmints over the years.   I was extremely steamed about a year ago when I discovered that the rabbits had mowed down small fruiting trees, chewed on larger ones and girdled several others.    This happened because of an unusually long snow cover.      Hang in there, figs are tough and grow back despite the setbacks.   Springtime is a great time of year to watch our plants come back to life especially after discovering such damage.    By the way, most of my fruiting trees sprung back with very good vigor after the damages last winter!

Ingevald

I think Bass could make up for scaring everyone by posting the availability list on Trees of Joy!  :)

Anxiously awaiting . . . . and glad you're not really quitting, Bass.  If you can't survive, there's no hope for us in Zone 5!  Sorry about the mice . . .
