Importing fig trees into the US from European countries

I have some family members in Spain and France that can send me fig plants from those two countries. Plants are in 1-3 gallon pots.

My question is, has anyone here imported fig trees or any other types of plants/trees from outside of US into the US?

If so, how the process goes? How long the US Customs keep the plants once they arrive into the US?

I have looked at the USDA Agr. site, I know I have to fill out some papers and probably get a license and trees will be inspected for diseases and.....

Any help appreciated.

You will find good information.

This is why I would recommend to just mail yourself cuttings.  Seriously.  If you're worried about them not making it through, send multiple boxes on different days ...

When you mail yourself cuttings from another country do you place a return address on the carton or not? If so and you where staying with relatives would it be wise to place their address on the box for return point.
Thanks
Lou

If it were me - and I have never done this - I would use the address of a hotel, leave off the room number and use a generic last name and first initial pulled from the phone book ;)

Sure- Last name Bourne perhaps?

Navid,

I go into Canada all the time.
I have taken apples and oranges with me into Canada and back to the U.S.
These fruits are for my own personnel consumption.

When I return to the U.S. the Customs confiscate the oranges but don't say anything about the apples.

This has happened to me twice and both times I acted dumb.

I asked why on the 2nd time and his response was show me where the oranges actually came from the U.S. They could be from South Africa all I know he said.

Don't want to piss those guys off either. They can ruin your day.

Of course I don't be smuggling anything in my truck anyway.

@NKE

Next time, mail them to yourself. Never fails from what I am told!

I would not use a relatives name as return address.
Onthe chance that the customs office inspects the package, and takes it seriously, there might be some trouble for trying to import illegally.

loslunasfarms and grant,

Great idea. Thank you guys.

@NKE

If you are on extended travel, mail it to a friend in the states so they may save the cuttings.

A note: DO NOT MAIL THEM IN DAMP PAPERTOWELS! Instead, bleach them in a 10% solution and scrub them. Rinse and let them air dry, triple wrap in Saran HI-Quality wrap, put some packing tape around it to keep it from unravelling.

Not using the papertowels keeps your cuttings from becoming a petri dish for mold and cuttings can be kept fresh for weeks w/o refrigeration.

loslunasfarms,

 Thank you. I do have a question, would it be necessary to wrap each individual scion separately or wrap them all in one bundle?

You can bundle them.
