Impressive Potted Figs

These potted figs really caught me eye. This is how I would like all of my potted figs to look one day.

Very cool!

Rich, those are some amazing trees. I'm very happy you posted the pictures, gives mess an Idea on what to shoot for.  How old do you think those trees are (on average)

Scott

Nice Nice Baby, .......I love it,......I can see my future...LOL      Thanks Rich for Posting this, Really Cool Stuff going on there.

They look truly amazing!
thanks man!

Rich any idea the age of the trees?
I wonder what type of plant food they are using.
They are amazing size trees in pots.

The are wonderful.  Be cool to have inground trees look like that too.  Moving them would require that fork lift.  Another new toy.

I'm wondering about the age - and if they have to be moved anywhere for winter. They would definitely require a forklift, which is in the background of the one picture...

The look realy old but very healthy and how about those olive trees in the background on the third pic! At least a hundred years old!
Very nice work Rich thanks. Can you drive the Lull though?

These pictures all came from French nursery websites or blogs.

I think I need a bigger basement! lol

I think it may be that those trees were raised to that caliper in-ground, and then transplanted into the pots to make some impressive specimen plants.  Post #3 pic has some further evidence- that mechanical fork would be perfect for popping them out.   Then cut roots to fit pot, perhaps some pruning on top to balance the plant and voila!

This little guy now has a goal in mind, regardless;)

Would you guess 20+?  Not being familiar with the growth rates there, it's had to say.  I'm sure it will take mine much longer to reach that caliper on the trunk since I have such a short growing season here in Colorado.

Still, they are great pictures, kind of reminiscent of bonsai in a way.

Again, thank you for posting the pics

Scott

Rich,
this Fig trees look amazing in pots.

They are grown in ground and transplanted to pots at dormant stage.
That's what you do with Bonsai trees too , to show they are aged.
I wouldn't be surprised to find out this fig trees are 6-8 year old...
Here's a pic of my in law relative's figs in ground, he told me they are 6-8 year old.

They are beautiful but my back hurts just looking at them!

The fig trees are nice - but he's prouder, and that's cool.

Hi RichinNJ,
IMO, those pots are just used for selling.
Those trees were raised in ground, and potted after some time - like the olive trees in the background.
See the horizontal stakes on the surface of the pots, those help the tree in not flipping with the wind while the roots adapt to the pot.
I have one nursery here with such a fig tree in their yard, but I didn't see it crop - nor did I check the price ... I wonder if it did crop, or if all the figs fell to lack of something at some point ...

Nice photos !

Hi Jose,

Several of those potted plants had prices of € 200-400. The infamous but now closed Bellaclare nursery on Long Island had large potted trees for $800 + in 2006.

I'm looking forward to growing our plants as thick and as big as we can in 20 gallon pots.

Great looking trees Aaron.

Bonsai plants are extraordinarily interesting. I wish I had the aptitude to grow them.

Wow.. those potted trees look awsome!  I have a celeste in a container that is probably as big as thick as my wrist now.  Maybe 3" diameter?

Zone5digger.  What are those long white containers called that you're holding there?

Try root pruning these large fig trees:)
