Who (and how) 'improved' any/the BT ?!? So far only a twig is shown... [E: for example; the Improved Celeste(s) we have are seedlings bred by Dr. O'Rourke at LSU using a Celeste as one parent.]

Improved Brown Turkey is a legitimate fig. I have one. It grows in a bush form, naturally drawf. Produces large reddish purple figs. Figs taste great! Its one prolific fig tree. THe ebay ad show the tree being dormant. Dave Wilson nursery in CA sells them to nurseries across the US. Some say the IBT is the same as the California Brown Turkey. It very well could be. I have a small CBT and will be comparing it to my IBT. If you search for IBT here, you won't find much. The same is true for search Italian Everbearing. If the IBT is the same as CBT, then I'm ok with that. A caprified IBT or CBT is extremely rich and very very very sweet. At least those tasted at UCD aka Wolfskills were. I did order one from that guy on eBay. Mine should arrive sometime today.

I would hope you would not start this Topic up. The Seller is selling a tree. Why are you bashing the person, or tree. I have had great figs from my Brown Turkeys. The weather here is perfect and they are sweet when not over-watered. Igor you can get any tree you want, you live up the street from Jon, if they don't want to ship to us, its OK, we have a lot of access to commercial and private fig growers.

Maybe I should get one then. Still, I do not see 'how a BT was improved' - maybe it is a new found similar/better unkown fig...

If you're in CA, go to Dave WIlson's website, punch in your zip code and up pops a list of nurseries in your area. That eBay ad has an excellent price. Commerical nursery resellers buy huge quantities of figs at a tremendous low price, but you have to buy alot of them! I know a guy that places an order from Dave Wilson. He says, he never gets all of his order filled. The reason why is, the trucks coming from CA are filled and the nurseries along the way get dibbs on changes to their orders. And by the time the truck reaches the Carolinas, it only has Brown Turkey, Tx Everbearing and Improved Brown Turkey figs left. It pisses off the nurseries but they have to take what's left or risk not having figs to sell. More on the IBT, my tree did give me 3 crops and the figs did not split of spoil like some. They are not, repeat, NOT the same as Brown Turkey. The tree is not that hardy either but is sensitive to cold weather. And no, it's not the same as Black Jack or Black Spanish as some may believe. I have these too.

Dennis, Thanks for the info! My local nursery can get single trees from Dave Wilson. I may ask them to get one. Very intriguing!

lol, I thought this was going to be a joke thread with a pic of a regular Brown Turkey placed in the trash, or perhaps a BT with all of its limbs pruned off and other varieties grafted on.

See, GreenFin, now you have to add the IBT to your wish list. It seems to be a good one judging from the Dennis' description

And maybe California BT, too, just to compare to IBT :)

My tree did come moments ago. I must say, this tree did come from a commercial nursery. It was professionally wrapped. It came bare root and taped inside the 3 foot triangle box. It also came with invoice and Florida USDA certificate. I bought 2. Two seperate boxes and seperate certificates. Both are 3' tall whips. But for a dwarf tree, these grow fast!
Here are a few pics taken last year.
For a small tree, mine produced some large figs. I had to tie them up to keep the branches from breaking. The leaves on my tree shaded some figs keeping them from getting dark purple. Again, the figs are sweet and can only get better with age.
My CBT should produce figs this year.
Kerry, I do not have that tree. I should have asked about it when I called about their Tx EVB. It MIGHT be the same as the Improved Brown Turkey. I do buy figs from our healthy home market. And those that I've bought were Black Mission and Brown Turkey. BUT, just because the label says "Brown Turkey Figs", doesn't mean they are not Improved Brown Turkey figs. I asked the owner at the market and she said, seller will truncate the name of an item just to fit all the letters on the small label. She said, if my orchard fig look and taste like those purchased, then they are probaably the same fig. The same is with Black Mission. Their grocery label said Mission FIgs. The owner said, they are the same as Black Mission but again, they shorten the label just to fit all the letters.
I am happy with the 2 IBT figs I got from this guy off eBay and will probably buy from him again.

Hi, When I told you that I already crossed at least 4 strains of brownturkeys here ! - but they are in gardens - not at nurseries - so far I ,supposedly , only saw one strain of BTs at the nurseries . Does, by chance, the nursery have the story of that IBT - coming strait from Turkey ? Sometimes there is a label on the tree - ok sometimes the label is so generic that it doesn't make any sense ... Let me taste my own BT this year ... before adding more Bts ... Ho no it is ok , if a good fig strain shows up at the nurseries, I'll catch up ! BT or not BT in the name, that is not a problem for me. It would be great if you could document the IBT strain with description and photos ... Just for future refs .

JDSFrance, the "label" I am talking about is the white grocery sticker label of a plastic container of figs, not trees. These labels usually state this: MISSION FIGS or BROWN TURKEY FIGS .

Armando, you are a very wise man. you are right about this. It is buyer's responsibility to know what they want to buy, regardless of any name given by the seller, Seller is there for business (money!!!) and not to do a buyer a favor, this is not a charity world. That's why I am working on my project so hard, so the buyer can identify any Fig they see on market or know what truly they have to begin with.

Thanks Aaron, originally thought Igor was putting down a fig variety. He wasn't. I have been thinking all week about the Kadota. It doesn't compare in value to a Maltese Falcon, it is not an inferior variety . Just easier to get than some of the exotics. Maybe I would get personal, if he attacked my little Jarupa tree....LOL

Hi Jdsfrance, Just curious, how did you cross 4 strains of BT? Thanks!

Careful now; a 'cross' could have a breeding meaning. But most likely here, it means as in 'came across'?

I wanted to get to my local nursery (Armstrong) today to place an order for this IBT (thanks Dennis for the nice photos!) but the rain is just too heavy, will try on Sunday. I would prefer the online ordering but I am not sure who sells the IBT, I might call the nurseries on the Dave Wilson’s website.
