Improved Celeste and Florea,The earliest varieties to ripe, here.

That is strange Robert ,Improved C,is almost done ripening here, your plant developed,a problem, like a shock, from root pruning or lack of nutrients,or too much of nitrogen, something is not right.

Don't know Herman. All of my postings are conditional. I Have not been testing figs long enough to draw any conclusive facts. I was surprise to see them ripening very late August - early September.

There could be some factor that I'm over looking

I do know we are about three to four weeks behind you on all figs ripening here.

There are many figs called Abruzzi. I hope this happens to be a variant that is extra early.

I will take some pictures of the leaf and the fruit and post them later, for your identification.

Herman,

Do you know how much die back the Florea experienced yet as of this past winter (2014)?

Thanks!

I found out on Christmas day as ,John ,the owner of outside in ground Florea visited me:
In 2014,the tree lost all secondary branches, and only the main 3 trunks ,survived,at about 5 foot tall.
Also,it grew new wood late,by JUly first, and managed to ripe about one third of the fruits it grew.
Of course the Winter was harsh, and the tree was not protected, like usually every year,in the open.

How many "improved" Celeste is there?  Mine is the LSU version.

Thanks Herman!

My Improved Celeste has fruits and leaves ,identical to the tree in pixies above, and the description is corect.
On another note,I had,a Celeste fig from Home depot, that had on the tag ,many names like:
Celeste,sugar fig ,Malta,Improved Celeste,Honey fig,etc,but it was just a plain Celeste.

One othe distinct cultivar ,that is improved by Dr O R'ourke is called :
O 'Rourke Celeste, and it has ,3 and 5 lobe leaves.

The one in the pixies above is a very good specimen, and it produced a lot of fruits,in 2014 for me even after the harsh Winter we had ,here in NJ,in 2014.
