Improved Celeste & Black Mission

Good day, over the past few days, it's been raining off and on.  I was worried about those figs starting to ripen and loose flavor due to all the rain.  Well, I thank God for all the rain and just covered my trees and hoped for the best.  I picked these today!  Improved Celeste and Black Mission.  Improved Celeste planted in the ground, BM is in a container.  Both were excellent and spot on good!  Black Mission taste the best but IC was very sweet.  They weighed BM  33 and 36grams.  IC weighed 38 and 37 grams.  Hmmm I'm leaning more and more over to liking dark figs!  Can't wait till Stella, Atreano, Atreano Gold, Verte, and Battalagia Green ripens.  Enjoy!

Love it!  Congratulations!

Going to the dark side with Martin?

I tell you Jon......I am considering it!  Some of my prize trees are 5'+ tall and are great producers this year.  My Italian Blacks, Black Maderia, VdB, Hardy Chicago, LSU Tiger, KB, RdB, Negronne, Don Fortiss, Black Celeste, Petite Negra, Smith, IC, and a few others are truly AMAZING!!!

So, this Fall, I may start culling those non-dark ones except of only a few.

Tell us more about Don Fortiss when you have the time and willingness.  That one is not deeply talked about.

Dennis thanks for showing the pictures.
I would welcome you to the dark side as of now its just little ole me .

Watch in years to come as folks start culling there fig tree's what they dispose of.   ; )

Like many proclivities that people aren't willing to admit publicly, there are probably more here lurking on the dark side than you think.

I'm leaning that way myself, but I wonder if it's more psychological than anything? They just look better to me--I haven't eaten enough yet to form a valid opinion. Have any die-hard dark-siders ever tried a blindfolded taste test? It would be interesting to see if the preference is still as strong when the fig can't be seen.

Martin, THE FORCE is strong!  I'm fighting it!

Ken, if people would do a blind taste test using Smith figs.  They would say it's a black fig.  Smith figs will fool anyone.

Sha, Don Fortiss is a late ripening fig black fig.  It's medium in size and has an awesome awesome taste!  I got my tree from VS about 2 years ago.  The leaves are beautiful blueish green.  In my climate, my tree is in ground and produces figs till frost.

thanks,

I love green figs, but love black cherries.

All the Black Mission on the tree near my house were ruined by the recent several inches of rain.  Unfortunate!
