Improvised tent for Fig Air Layers

Today I separated an air layer from my Dottato tree. I potted it in a 5 gallon container. I took photos of this to show how I cover with a tent made from 5 gallon plastic water bottles. I also use these bottles as cloches to extend my garden season. So they serve several purposes. Here in the arid dessert, the dry heat is damaging to a new fig air layer. I always cover with a tent to retain humidity for up to a week and keep in the shade. Then I gradually wean from the tent once I see the tree acclimating and keep in the shade for about another week. Then into direct sunlight when all looks well!

The following photos show how the cloches are made from a 5 gal water bottle. You will need a hand saw to remove the bottom. You can make stackable sleeves by removing the top of a bottle as well. I have stacked 2-3 of these sleeves to accommodate a tall air layer. The water bottles have some contour to the top and bottom. If you cut them at the right level, you can actually fit them together snugly without them coming apart.

I also save the blue plastic caps and use them to completely seal the tent for the first few days. Then I partially open the cap for a few days, remove the cap entirely for several days, then remove the tent several days later. Some times the process takes longer but when I see the leaves wilting or curling, I start the whole thing over until the A/L acclimates.
I included a full water bottle in the photo but you can get the empties from any local vendor. I ask them for their defective bottles. These companies recycle their dents and scratches and they will drill several holes in the empties so that they can't be refilled again. I've acquired quite a few of these over the years and what's nice is that they were free!
I hope this provides an idea to some who are tenting their air layers and are not fortunate to have a green house. This is much easier than trying to use large plastic bags, etc. Like I said, you can also use these cloches in the garden and they stack nicely out of the way when not in use.

Very innovative, Leon! Thanks for sharing.
