In ground fig found in Ohio!!!!!!!

A family member in Ohio just bought a nice piece of property.
Talking to them, they have a in ground fig tree that obviously lives through
zone 5 winters.
I will be getting pictures of leaf pattern and we as a group can see if we can identify
the variety. I sent this same person a rooted fig 2 years ago and they have great
interest in figs. Beings they appreciated the fig i sent them, they offered me
all the cuttings I want this fall/winter.
Hopefully I can help those in colder zones with a fig that can survive in
zone 5 and above.
I will send them instructions to get a air layer for me to start with in a few weeks.
I'm excited to get a fig that seems to have thrived in Ohio winters.

Will keep ya all posted on progress of this tree.

That's wonderful! A fig tree makes a nice bonus to getting a new property.

Doug, That's a great find. I'm about 55/60 miles from Ohio. If it can survive there it would make it here. Hope to see some pictures soon.

Nice find...put me on the list please!

Ditto what Arachyd said.  Did your friend say if it died to the ground and regrew or if there was top growth that made it through the winter?  It's good they recognized it and didn't chop it down.
Add me to the list too, please.

Great find! Look forward to seeing the leaves and fruits.

From what I was told, this is a large tree. I have no pictures yet.

"Large tree."  Nice!!

Just found out relative is moving in 2 weeks.
Hope to get pictures sooner but may have to wait a bit.

Doug

Is there a list? I don't want to be pushy but if you do decide to....and since it's a big tree.....sign me up.

Doug --

As you may have realized, you now have a very big problem:  What are you going to name it?

Even though I am not in a "cold" climate, I would happily trade a cold hardy fig, or local pomegranate for some cuttings or an airlayer.

I have no idea what kind it is. Probably a already known hardy variety.
Lets not jump the gun on a list as of yet. My friends always get first pick but
I have nothing yet to give, lets see how I can do. Im hoping to be able to
get enough to pass around.

Doug

Hi Doug....please put me on the list of people to put on the list when it time to have a list :)
It's tough up here in zone 5

Is the tree in a protected location?

Have I ever told you what a great friend you are? Wink wink, nudge nudge.

I'm in zone 5a here, so I know what you mean. Haven't tried to overwinter anything yet, as I am new to this addiction. I did put a Chicago Hardy in the ground last year, so waiting to see if it comes back from the ground. I'm kind of skeptical though.

I would like to be on the list to be put on the list for the list  when it comes time for a list lol.

I'm always interested in cold hardy figs, but I agree a little early. Looking forward to more info as it develops and such.

I sell inexpensive cuttings in the winter from my orchard.
I will do what I can to distribute whatever I get sent in cuttings this fall
of this tree. That will keep it fair to everybody.
Meanwhile I will share information as I get it.
Thanks all.
Doug

I'm in Ohio and Hardy Chicago has been in the big box stores for years. It survives in ground although a couple years ago it did get killed right down to the ground. Came right back late the next spring.
An actual tree would be awesome to have and not worry about though. Look forward to seeing pics and figuring out what it is.

Are they sure it isn't a mulberry tree? I hope it isn't but a lot of people confuse the two.

We an always hope it's some new fig hardy to zone 3  :)

I'm in Ohio!  Trade me for my picolla negretta cuttings that also survives in ground here! :-D

Very interesting, can you post pictures? Where is it planted, next to the house?

I don't know where the tree is located on the property.
Again, Im waiting on pictures.
All I know is my father told me they said it was big.
"they" are also growing container figs I sent them.
Dad is growing figs in Ohio in containers.
I wont ask for cuttings until winter for dormant cuttings.
I have no clue how many I will get but I assure you I will have
some in my orchard to grow and take cuttings from to share.
That could be 2 years or more away.
I just found it odd to hear of a big fig tree obviously unprotected
living in Ohio's harsh winters.
They don't even take possession of the property
for 2 more weeks.
Then they will be busy moving.
I will share pictures of it when I get it.
That is the best I can do.

Doug
