In hide from gnats

Some in Pretzel containers,
some in spice containers,
some in plastic bags,

all with small soap/wine traps inside the container...so far we are OK!

Very little moist in the soil mix,  and I open to air them as I did when they were in moss.

Go Graca. Good for you in not giving up. It looks like they really like your place. Just wanted to say what a great job your doing and to cheer you on. I think a lot of people would have given up but noooooooooo not you. I think it shows that you are a really strong person. Thanks for all your posts.

Grasa:

I'm reading your post and saw the idea of a wine/soap gnat trap.  I quickly googled it and and put one together.  Here is my version.    I also use yellow sticky traps.  Thanks for the inspiration this Sunday morning.

I've read that gnats are also attracted to cider vinegar or old wine.
It was suggested to put out a small bowl of cider vinegar, (or old wine) to attract them to it.
I'd add a few drops of dish soap to it to be sure they drown instantly.

Also I wonder if a little yeast powder, sugar, and warm water (to start the yeast going)
wouldn't attract them also? With a little Borac acid powder added as a poison.
Borac Acid is ordorless, and tasteless.

Dan (Foster) I made those also, but I saw them flying around and not being able to get in there...so I removed all and my traps are cups or little plastic containers. the best ones are of yellow collor - that one collects the most. I put a small trap in each of my dome bags.  I am also sprinking this insecticide from Bayer (complete).  I am not sure if I just broke their cycle or what, but have not seen any new ones or dead ones since yesterday. Not leting my guard down.

I have an idea!
Why not put your pots in a large garbage bag,
Put in a  large bowl, or liter bottle with 2 cups of vinegar,
drop in about a tablespoon (or 2) of baking soda into the vinegar.
Immediately seal up the bag and wait about 30 minutes to an hour.
The co2 generated by the vinegar, and baking soda should kill any bugs in the bag,
both adult, and larva by asphyxiation.

This method could probably be used with potting soil before it's used by generating the co2, then injecting it into the bag and manipulating the soil in the bag while it's sealed. to be sure the co2 penetrates it more throughly.

Dan7- great idea, but when you have too many it is difficult. how I dealt with it was pulling all outside (porch) cleaning all the windows, shelves and groves with clorox, than, dunk each individual cup or pot, let it drip all excess and put them back in place with cups with soap and yellow fly traps everywhere. So, I think I am doing OK now, but my guards are in very high alert, for these creatures. They are tiny and evil.

The plants started to show life, wilted ones with new growth, so I may have lost less than I thought- only time will tell.

Wait a minute.  Garbage bags are a dime a dozen.  I like it Dan!  I just brought out the biggest guns I have!  Commercial insecticides!  JD helped me hit them one by one.

This whole fungus gnat thing drives me nuts!  And not just me...  Everyone here!  People send us cuttings, and we let them die?  Wrong.  Fight!!

Baby fig trees do not produce figs, so No FEAR!  Hit em with your best stuff!

Thank you DD, and Grasa!
I got the idea from a website I came across on getting rid of bugs,
and slugs in an exotic arrow frog terrarium!

Am I the only one who doesn't have gnats?   :) :) :) :) :)

JoAnn, knock on wood!

I'm knocking - I'm knocking!!

Maybe because the humidity is below 50% in my home.

I happened on this article on gnats and want to share it with you

It works. Use it everytime you use water. Can be bought in larger quanaties on ebay. The more you buy the cheaper it is per ounce/gram.

Does it work?

I use cider vinegar and a drop of dish soup in cups scattered around the cuttings, the jnats come in via bannanas and once in given the very short lifecycle and a plant room with water trays for orchids and moss for figs, its hard to get rid of them

Thanks for posting that article on the gnat life cycle. Some very good, concise information in there. Tks

I have read that a hydrogen peroxide water mixture will kill the larvae and not harm the plant. Has anyone tried this with cuttings?
