in praise of verte, aka green ischia

mine came from EL 5 years ago.  not in a good location. never been really vigorous in that location in ground. It was my best fig last year, strawberry jam.  we have had our coldest temps in almost 20 years, 0 or 1 degree so far, and ZERO sign of damage from cold.  it has been my fastest to root cuttings this season.  i will plant many copies in ground in the future

Nice...have one ordered for this spring. We made it to 9 degrees here.

Good tasting too. Sure hardy. Never need to protect it in winter.

This is good to hear. I didn't have any green figs so I bought a tiny Verte in ebay. From everything I am hearing on here she should be a vigirous grower and good tasting choice. I have been really staring at this little 12 inch stick thinking, "grow baby grow!"

My experience with GI is very positive. The big one at Monticello produced the very ripe figs that opened my eyes to fresh figs.
I have never had problems with rooting cuttings. As a matter of fact I think the GI cuttings I get from Monticello are more hardy and successful than any other variety.
I think it's a great fig - not as tasty to me as Battaglia Green or Col de Dame Blanc, but it's productive and dependable and darn good looking.

My friend has a 10+ year old green ischia tree in the ground that produces a ton of figs eveyry year. This last summer the figs were great and had a delicious strawberry jam flavor. It was my favorite fig this year and she let us pick around 20 lbs from her tree

Zach,
Green Ischia is an excellent choice for your area. Get a couple cuttings and you'll have one of the better figs (at least for around here).

PawPawBill, do you protect your tree?

I used no protection. I was amazed by the hardiness. My tree is on poor soil and grows slowly, which probably contributes to the hardiness.

I have mature hardy Chicago and Celeste in more protected locations showing much more signs of damage
