In response to my last topic 'Bogus Email'

The last topic that I posted 'email from "....." Bogus or not ???' has been deleted . It was not my intention to upset anyone on this forum , or imply  that Luigil was a bad person, a disreputable  Ebay seller or a scam artist.

My question was simply , to see if anybody had heard of or dealt with Luigil. I have not seen a post from him on this forum, nor a reply to a post for that matter. I did find his profile this morning ,  by manually searching for it on the member list .It did not come up in the http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/searchHe is a new member as of 12 Nov 12, with zero posts . I am thinking that is the reason that I could not find his name.

I am sad to say, that I have been burned before on another gardening site and was just being cautious by asking fellow members .  I did not mean to 'OUT' Luigi in any way , shape or form. If I offended him or anyone else by asking this question , I apologize.

I think what you did was best. If I were the moderator of this forum it would ( and other negative ones ) have been deleted at the onset of the negative posts. I don't think you offended him in anyway. I can not say the same for others.

Good move Cody

I assume the moderator deleted it, but at the end of the chat was some useful recommendations, sad that was not captured or maybe it was.

Cody
I think your actions were correct.  I also believe that there exists a certain decorum on this forum which must continue.  I really think that new members should understand that they should proceed softly when first joining and should certainly wait to solicit items until the new member has been email confirmed as the membership may or may not show up until that has happened.  I think the negative responses and comments should be reserved for PM or email, dissenting comments and opinions are certainly welcome, and encouraged, but there should be self imposed limits and those limits certainly precede the personal attacks.

Further, I also believe that there exists a certain level of responsibility rests on each member to exercise diligence and to question anything that may threaten the well being of our forum.  Do not let this forum deteriorate to the level that other forums have successfully achieved!!!

NOW, if anyone takes offense to these comments, lets take it outside,to the PM, LOL

I agree the idea of taking negative comments to the PM and email platforms.

I think the end of the last thread had some valuable material that needs further deliberation by the forum.  As such I am going to start a new thread.  Hopefully the two fellows that posted the Newbie rules can repost and we can go from there.

Womack

There are no 'Newbie' rules.  It's just etiquette and  being courteous.  People come on threads, see a new fig variety and say put me on your list for cuttings.  This is coming from people who have been on this forum for years.  They have no shame.  I have posted a few figs before and they 'Magically' appear in their wishlists. I post pics to be informative and I give them tentative names for ID purposes only.  I still see one fig in particular on people's lists that after further evaluation turned out to be a Brown Turkey.  I alerted people to this but they don't care. Whoopee! I'm destroying that fig most likely in the spring.

This is why you will not find a lot of people, especially long timers, posting any unique figs because they get bombarded with requests in PM's, emails and on threads.  I had to get nasty in a few past threads to make people stop.  It gets ridiculous.

A lot of people work hard to acquire these varieties and it's very disingenuous of people to come on and request cuttings.

I agree there are no "newbie rules".  Just suggestions about etiquette.  But at least some part of the discussion about forum etiquette was captured, and there's already a thread where that is.  (Unfortunately not all of it... some of it was useful but I think it's gone when the initiator deleted it).  It's at
http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/DRAFT-page-for-Jon-on-Forum-Etiquette-6116957

I'm just posting that for anyone that's interested.  If you're not interested, don't worry, it won't change the great way that this forum operates!

Mike

( I agree there are no "newbie rules".  Just suggestions about etiquette. ) I second that Mike no so called rules just a way to say hey newbie welcome this is how you should start off here in this forum. I wish I would have known this when I first came here.   Yikes!!!

I am a newbie and I love this forum for several reasons. I hope no one is offended when I learn of a new variety and then I add it to my wish list. It should be flattering. I obtain a variety then hear/ see pics and descriptions of a variant i didnt know about so if it sounds good I add it to wish list. If someone sees this and wants to SELL it to me than pm me . If I have something that someone has on their wishlist I will pm them to see if they want it.I had an interest in figs and a member here told me about this forum. It has been wonderful to be able to be a part of this forum. Several members here have OFFERED cuttings of varieties that I have showed interest in, and thank you to those members.
Being a newbie and wanting to obtain these variants is hard. I never want to offend or piss anyone off. I love figs and other plants as well .
I have learned so much from everyone here & the threads I have had the honor of reading. Through you guys trial and error others have been able to have great success. I will always be more than happy to pay for shipping and cuttings. I don't ever expect for someone who has spent time and money to just give away what they have worked so hard for.
There is people in this world who expect everything to be given to them. I'm not that type of person. I believe there is certain etiquette that should be observed. I hope no one takes offense to this. I am trying to build a good reputation here and I am thankful of everyone here.

Cody, I understand your concern with the previous post that was deleted. I have been nervous about buying things off eBay because I have seen posts on here about bogus sellers on eBay.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!
Thanks to those who have been so generous and not gotten mad at me for asking about their variety's
Jeff-

Thanks Cody!  You are now officially one of the "good guys!"

Suzi

Dom,

There's nothing wrong with folks (new or old) requesting cuttings or adding a new variety to their wishlist. Neither should it be viewed as wrong if they send you their wishlist in hopes of obtaining a given variety for themselves. That is what this forum is all about - the exchange of information AND plant material. If you don't want to be bothered with PMs or emails just make that known when sharing info and pics on a so-called new or great variety.

It is neither "ridiculous" nor "disingenuous of people to come on and request cuttings". Have you forgotten how you obtained some of the varieties you have?

Just want you to know Dom. I've enjoyed many of your topics and comments. So I don't mean any disrespect or offense toward you. Just that your comments are a bit out of line as well as irritating and inflammatory.

My goal here is not to start an on-going debate or argument but to simply state my view and opinion of such comments. I try not to state my opinions in this way unless such comments have rubbed me the wrong way. I guess this is one of those times..........

By the way. Would you please re-state the variety name that you feel is mis-indentified (but is in fact BT) so as to caution those reading this particular thread? Thank you.

Thanks Bill. It moderates the issue a bit.

Hi Bill.  There were several things that were in the previous thread from Cody that were jewels.  One of them was a bit of wisdom from you.  :-)    Something about "If you lend someone $20 and never see them again...".  Want to repeat that one?  I thought it was a pearl.  (I remember it but it was your post :-)

Mike

p.s.  I guess I'm one who didn't see any need for the thread to be deleted.  But Cody, just as you did nothing wrong in posting the question, neither did you do anything wrong in choosing to delete it.

Something seems odd about this person, just received this in my work email address, looks like his name is Luigi Leon and is using an email address from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, PA. Why send me an email after all of the chatter on this forum about him?

Hi,

My name is Luigi, I am new here on this Forum.

I read your blog and wanted to let you know that I had Green White,

Fico Bianco, which is an Italian White, and Sal's Corleone black.

Please let me know if you are interested in trading.

Thank you,

Luigi

Folks,
In my earlier post I said I would start a thread before I saw micheals thread. I deleted my thread to prevent confusion and duplication.

Maybe I shouldn't have said rules as I agree with more of an etiquette versus anything that would restrict the interactions on the forum.

I don't see a problem with new folks contacting others as long as it is done with respect and there isn't an air of entitlement involved. After all we all get excited about new varieties of figs or we wouldn't be members of the forum.

Well said Womack.
Quite a few of us Ga folks on here. Glad to know there are fig nuts here close by.
Maybe we should all get together some time and chat up about figs.lol

I would only like to add that I really don't like to come off as harsh toward anyone. And I hope I didn't seem too much like that in my previous post. Guess I was just feeling irritated and opinionated.

Also want to make sure everyone knows that Dominick deserves a lot respect from all of us. This based on his past career alone. If you'd like to know what I mean, just take a look at his profile.

Now, how about some fig pictures :-) ?

Such as.......

Bill, wonderful pictures! Delicious looking!

This is my first post.  I guess I'll dive in here. I have a few fig trees. Common ones, not hard to find. I came across this forum and was initially excited.  This is a sad thread that people would become so uptight with their figs. It's just wood. I do other plants too and I love peaches. Those are my favorite.  If anyone would request scion, even of my harder to get varieties, I would give it in a second or I would offer it up for sale depending on what it is.  It's just wood. I don't quite understand this forum.  Some of the people are putting crowns their wood. It's just wood.  Great wood, so lets focus on making them all common like the Desert King so that everyone can have them.  That's my goat with all plants.  I don't come here that often, so I guess I am new, but I'm no 'newbie' when it comes to plants. That's the beauty of plants. Old knowledge with the brand new knowledge of us all coming together and enjoying these great plants. This thread is the most annoying thread I've ever read. I realize it does take a long time to acquire certain varieties of plants, but what better joy to share and pass that on?  Not to be resentful.  Isn't that why you have your collection?  For the joy of it? That is what they are doing. They are new at it and are excited. I would think that the goal would be to help propagate them so that others could have the harder to get varieties.  I don't know what it would be to make you happy and not offended, but this coming bombardment will continue. That's just people. Wouldn't you want to try something that you love? You have the sought after varieties and they have the enthusiasm as you but they are new and don't have the plant yet. But with this enthusiasm they will obtain those desired varieties I would hope.   This site is one of the only sites that you can get such a vast variety of figs and like or not people will ask in many different ways.  Some will outright rob you, beg on their knees, offer cash, befriend you, or ask silently on their wish list at the bottom sig line.  I'm not including everyone in this forum, but it's like a box of fruit. A couple bad figs will spoil the rest.  I guess I'll get off my soapbox now. It was just sad to see some of you behaving in such a way. Come on. I hope you hear me. If not I don't know what else to say.  I believe this kind of talk will just run new people away.  Learn to love each other (including the newbies) like you love your figs.

I am a newbie too.  I had seen that post and at first thought I had logged on to another forum as another member noted.  Honestly, I was thinking I was going to leave this site and never come back since this was just another example (the 3rd) in the past few weeks of something like this since I joined.  I beleive this forum represents kindness, sharing, learning, helping, support and friendship.  Let's all make a promise to each other to do our very best to keep it that way, every day.

Bill,

You can't post a photo without a name ; )

What type of fig/tree?

Eithieus, most people on this forum are are genuinely giving and have been more than generous. They have helped me obtain hard to get varieties. Don't get the wrong idea about this forum. I love it here. I'm sure you will as well.

Thanks Jeff.

@ omotm; These pics are from a local tree I found growing here in W. KY. The Owner is of Lebanese descent. His grandfather brought it to the US from a mountainous region of Lebanon In the early 1900's.

This is still one of my favorite figs so far. Great flavor. Very cold hardy. Seems to be a bit of a slow grower though. But well worth the wait :). I'm working on growing my small trees to a size large enough to share cuttings with as many folks as possible.

The tree in the picture above (not mine) receives very little care and no winter protection at all. It's in an exposed location and never dies back here in zone 6b. Winter before last the temps fell below zero (-4F) more than once and this tree still only lost a few branch tips. So it's definitely worth trialing in some of our colder climates.

eithius: Ditto what Jeff said. Welcome to the forum!

omotm: Well said.

A couple more pics:
