In the 70's and raining

I can't believe it's 77 and raining now!  I know some of you have been cussing the rain, here I am thankful.    My poor garden has been beat up by the sun and heat this summer and looks very sad - except the fig tree!!

I'm sure the new little figlets will love having this rain.  The cooler temps will be gone after today for a while - back into the 90s and I'm sure we'll get into the 100s again before the season is done.

Jo-Ann,

It rained nearly 4" (just north of Austin) over the weekend.  It was hard to curse the rain after the past few summers, but many of the pomegranate trees had "nearly" ripe large pomegranates.  I spent part of Sunday pulling a lot of fruit that wasn't quite ripe.  I left the smaller (medium) sized fruit on in hopes they will continue to ripen without splitting.

The rest of the trees were very happy.

Isn't rain an amazing thing? Gallons of hard chlorinated water just are not the same. We got the whiff end of the rains but still about 3" and it's like Spring every time it does. Copper Lilies all over the yard and lots of little figlets too. That will probably not ripen...

James - your pomegranates do that well? I just get throwing practice objects that bear no resemblance to the ones in California.

I love rain!  It's rare here in summer, but we do get ripping monsoons in August from Tropical storms.  Love the rain, but hate the humidity!

Sorry about your pomegranates!  No fun.  I've found they are just like figs, in that you can neglect them, let them think they are dying, give them some TLC hope, and suddenly, you got dozens of those babies!

Alexis,

It took about 5 years for them to produce (even one), but I get between 75-150 pomegranates per tree.  Now that I think about it, they fruited the year I announced it was their last year to live.  I have five that are fruiting which were labeled "Wonderful" but are not.  Actually, I think there are at least two different varieties.

This year I planted 5 other varieties and this year I've rooted six new varieties from cuttings.  Hopefully next year 'Angel Red' and 'Cloud' will fruit at least a few.

We got rain last week and it's been raining off and on everyother day and  most of my figs are starting to split and spoil.  Boohoo!

Last year, record breaking rain and lot's of sour figs, this year relatively dry until recently. Yes I like the rain too, but please in moderation!

I've been out in the garden every night after work - around midnight or later to water the garden for an hour or so.  The rain has given me a break from watering so late.  I like doing it - very peaceful at that hour, but, after being on my feet for 10-12 hours I'd like to relax for a bit.

We have had rain on and off for the last 5 days or so but today's temp was great!

I am glad my first crop didn't get ruined from the rain, I would have been disappointed.

I am sorry to hear of the others having their crops ruined.

Rain, Let me tell you about rain. Ever since little Debbie rolled through the state it has been raining everyday. I feel for the farmers in the corn belt with their drought. My prayers are with them. As for here it will not stop raining. The RNC convention will be in town next week and it looks like we may be shaping up for a hurricane. I am just hoping a tropical storm does not get loose in the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf is so warm any blow that gets in there will turn into a nasty.

Last night I woke up to flashes, and thought there was a message on the blinking phone, but thunder followed, then hard rain.  So this morning, I think I'll go out and check the figs, and got hit with a huge drop of rain, noticed the pool was churning with major drops, so I stayed inside with my coffee and watched!  Luckily, our figs have finished production, so no splitting worries.

I feel sorry for all who must endure the extreme sides of this terrible weather year we are having.  Those in the drought, and those in the torrents.  Not good.  I don't think any place on earth is safe from weather extremes.  Maybe the garden of Eden, but I never got that address.......

Suzi

Suzi you need to get some long season (late bearing) figs.
