In the Zone

I currently reside in C. Oregon.  We have 3 little micro climates within our area.
First off.... were cold!  BUT, where I live we are COLDER...  what grows in Redmond
does not grow in Sisters.  Our growing season in Sisters is about 1 mo. shorter than
Redmond which is 20 min away.  I would like to find out which zone we are in and
which figs I could grow and be happy.
I do have a greenhouse if that helps......
Thanks Much
Amber

Check here ->http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/  and enter your state or zip code to find your zone.

Awesome!  Thanks Vince... I am Zone 6a

The greenhouse will definately help your efforts.....wish I had one.....maybe next year??           Edit:  I see your Zone is 6a...I'm in zone 6b and can grow all manner of figs.....so I think you are going to be more than Ok.....Good Luck

Thanks!  I look forward to trying to grow them both outdoors and in.  I would prefer to keep them in Lg pots though if possible

Pots should be more reliable, as you can control their environment a little better.  There are some very cold hardy varieties that should survive your winters, such as Marseilles Black VS, Hardy Hartford, & Hardy Chicago.  Lots more that are pretty cold hardy.

Good luck with your fig quest. Try searching the forum for threads by Herman on cold hardy varieties.

I was in Sisters two summers ago for a friends wedding. it is beautiful out there.

Good luck and welcome, Amber.  I haven't seen a photo of your greenhouse yet.  Does it have a large enough opening/door to get large plants in and out?  If not, maybe it can be modified at some point to make it easier to bring fig trees in and out.  See this photo that someone else had posted in some other thread a while back (forget the thread now), but using uniform pot sizes (when trees are big enough to warrant large pots) should make it easier for this to work.  You may have to make your own.  http://figs4fun.com/fpix/FP866-09%20800.jpg

Womack... yes we definitely live in some beautiful surroundings... cold which I can't stand, but beautiful none the less.

Harvey, I cannot figure out how to post pics because apparently I am inept.  The greenhouse however is in my avatar... best I can do for now, sorry!  lol
I like that cart.  I may just have to have my husband build me one.
