Tropical Storm Joaquin has formed in the Atlantic Ocean. The official forecast track from the National Hurricane Center has the storm maintaining tropical storm strength as it curves to the north over the next few days. The storm could be a significant rain threat to North Carolina and the Mid-Atlantic later this week and into the weekend.

Assuming the hurricane hits land, what does this mean for us? What preventative measures should be taken for in ground and container figs? My forecast is saying 6 inches of rain in the next 7 days..

Well, here in NC---its been raining off and on for 5 days straight!!!!   We don't need anymore rain!  I'm having to go out and lay some of my large container trees on their side to keep them from dying from water!  I guess this is payback for no rain in June and July!

You aren't lying Snaglpus! I have been waiting patiently for some fruit to ripen and guess what?  Yup. Started to ripen as soon as the torrential downpour has nailed us. Needless to say the fruit took on too much water, swelled up huge, split, and tastes has gone way down.  Oh well, can't complain too much since NC usually is a great place to grow figs.

Well fortunately I'm still new and only have my newly started Figs cuttings that are a few weeks to a few months old but my tropicals and such are enjoying it I believe. Jabo's are loving this lol. But for me I've had enough. It's rained for a week for me and just stopped a few hours ago.

Still raining here..... figs are splitting bad

Ah - every time i hear hurricane now, i cringe! I just got back from work travel and they even delayed my flight into JFK yesterday due to storm last night...even though its a few days out.

I would personally bring potted plants in garage in preparation for hurricane type winds and the excessive water accumulations. I would assume there is nothing to do for inground, but as long as your not in an area of severe flooding and have good drainage your fine (i'm not so lucky).You could always buy sandbags and make a barricade around precious fig trees...hehe.

 I will be taking whatever small plants i have indoors when the storm actually rolls in near me.
