Indoor Grow Lights question

I use a T-5 ballast system for winter rooting and young plants. I read about a different system called a PAR-38 LED grow light being good for fruit trees grown indoors. Does anyone have any experience with a PAR-38 or thoughts on which is better for figs or even citrus? Thank you and happy holidays.

rafaelissimo, go to GW forum and look at the "growing under lights" as those people are obsessed with lighten knowledge.  They are in a world of their own.  Not saying anything negative at all but that is their passion and expertise.

What does gw stand for. When I typed in gw forum, a forum for a video game came up

GardenWeb.com

The PAR 38 is a flood light. I have yet to use them for indoor plant cultivation, yet I have thought about it for years. I usually use 400 to 1000 watt Metal Halides, sometimes 250 watt HQI metal halides. I also have used T-5's and I'm currently using 700 watts of LED's on a light mover with great results.

When you find out more about the PAR 38's, please share with us, I'm very interested.

I do just fine with t8 lights for figs, citrus ect. Just makes a big diff what and how you feed.

I also use the T8 and just use a warm white and cool white bulb in each fixture, plants grow fine but you have to keep the bulbs very CLOSE just a couple inches from the leaves.

Thanks everyone, I see that like soil mixes, choice of lamp is complex and open to multitudes of opinion. I will do some more research. Heating my greenhouse is hugely expensive and I am exploring some indoor growing options as an alternative. That may also be expensive, what I do know is that running my T5s in the basement for rooting and starter figs last year was negligible as far as price was concerned.

I have some thousand watt par source lights, that came out of a Yale experiment These are top of the line lights . They can use hps bulb or metal halide bulbs. They have a built in hood that attaches to the ballast. They say they are 220, but the electrician I got them from said he turned them on with 120 to check them. I would trade or sell them if interested. I do not know how to post pics so email me your number and I will send pics by phone thanks.

Excellent timing of thread. I was given some bare rooted plants and I am almost clueless
as to how to get them going. I have done minimal research on grow lights and would definitely
like a good setup for about 10 plants. As for soil mixture, I may need to see a friend in legal grow
op. but he is hopeless in a small setup for up to 10 plants. He did say I can send my plants to him
but I let to see my plants every day or other day.

Went to check out Garden Web "Grow Lights"  --- there are tons of info there. Not easy to digest.

Yea Paully22, those folk are really into the whole lighting thing.  Most of it doesn't make much sense to a non techy like me.  I just use a couple of cheap shop lights and that seems adequate for me.  Oh well, I will just wait for the sunshine to come out.
