Indoors air layer of Dalmatie

A forum member gifted this Dalmatie and it has a new limb growing like crazy that kept taunting me to air layer it.  So a quick snip of a couple leaves and cup modification to fit, spoon in mix and it is done.  Going to leave the surface open and water along with the single nodes.

Propagation #682.  Looks at all of those bowls!!!

Sorry, I have ADOS.

Looks great, what kind of light do have the tree under inside?  Did you remove any of the bark in the soil?

good luck

Thanks it is a 1000 W metal halide which plays havoc on my cell phone camera but the plants seem to love it.  No bark was harmed in the making of this project lol.

I use to run 1K MH's on my reef tank, and a lot of them. It seemed that the havoc for me was my electric bill.

1K definitely puts out plenty of light and radiation to keep the figs happy.

Ok, no bark harmed.  I like that, I've read that a lot of people damage the bark to "encourage" root growth.

It may encourage, I don't know.  None of my single node cuttings were scraped or otherwise either.  It may make things go faster in some cases but I'm in no hurry.  This is a brand new green growth limb so there's no bark to speak of.  Not even sure it will root.

Interesting.  I say why not, it's worth a try.  Nothing ventured.....  you know the rest.

I think I will try an air layer or two next season.  I hope this works out well for you!  I'll be watching. :)

Don't see any roots yet but crazy growth.  The side limb has become dominant over the main stem.

Figtree, tell me where you're growing to, and I'll tell you where from the sun or light hits you .
If you want the small one to grow just turn the pot to expose the small limb to the sun .
At this point you should do it or the bigger want will totally shade the small one, and in the future the small one may crumble ...

This tree sits in the corner with a mirror behind it, it was taken into the kitchen for a picture.  The taller limb is actually farther from the light!  There has been very little growth on the main stem since the side limb started growing well.

The less light there is the wider the internodal growth.  Low light relative to the plant's needs makes the stem grow longer but weaker.  This is why a lot of us use high powered grow lights if we're going to grow indoors.  That weak growth often needs to be pruned off to have a strong tree.  Plus a weakened tree is more prone to disease.

It's a 1000 W MH and the tree is about 5 ft from the bulb.  Does it need to be closer?

Finally see some roots.
