Inexpensive fig pest protection

I was looking thru Raintree Nursery's catalog and found an interesting item that may be useful for fig growers. They sell apple maggot control bags-144 for $12.50. One slips the woven bag over "nickle size" growing fruit and apparently it expands as the fruit grows. Might be good to protect figs from insects and birds.
Also I've turned up the heat in my overwintering fig shed to 48 degs. took the black plastic off the windows and watered the figs in preparation to set them outside in a month. I'm hoping this scheme will get them out of dormancy sooner and be ready to grow as soon as they're set out.

Rich, the only pest for figs is gophers (love the roots) birds (love the fruit) and Nematodes (root damage).

and ants and those pesky yellow jackets .

Guys, you missed a few:  Racoons, possums, deer and wild hogs. Will let you know during blackberry season whether bears are fig pests too.

they are all good eat.. well.. it's not worth going after racoons. others are much easier. i don't think i'll eat yellow jackets.. but ants are good too.

Deer eat figs?  I thought they didn't like them because of the latex.

Those "bags" are the disposable socks found at shoe stores. Search "Foot Sox" of ebay or amazon, half that price!

I wouldn't actually use them for apples. Apparently they don't block codling moth well. Ziploc bags work best, believe it or not. The Foot Sox are good for peaches though! I'll be trialing some this year, I think.

I have a bunch of these (bought a case a year or so ago).  They work very well for codling moth in my experience.  I've also used them to protect figs from fruit a little and they work fine for that.  I may also use them when I start fig breeding to keep the fig wasp out of developing figs so that I can control what pollen enters the fruit.
