Infant/Juvenile Mortality in cuttings and young trees

As discussed in another thread.  This was the start of my research into the "whys" of seemingly healthy, well rooted cuttings and healthy 1 gal trees all of a sudden, wilt and die.  The article below is a good read and is the doorway to other information.

Any discussion on this is welcome and contentious discussion is gladly accepted but I would expect that we can discuss our differences in a civil, well mannered order, if not we will agree to disagree and end the discussion.

It only happens to me when over watered and cool temperatures.

Wow... This is disheartening info.... Seems that fungus gnats not only deal death directly but also are the vector for introducing these fungi on their feet... Seems that whole greenhouses can be infected and devastated and by extension, an entire cutting rooting operation could be laid low.... Yikes....

I've tended to ascribe most "young" failures with overwatering. But I don't think that's true all the time, it's just easy for me to use that excuse. Sometimes, a cutting or two just seem to die, for no good reason. Thankfully, I've had good rooting results and have taken most cuttings to more mature trees. Last year, two seemingly well rooted CDDN cuttings wilted and died on the same day. It was weird. I blamed it on possession. Or that they were twins and, immediately after one went, the other followed suit out of sadness.
