Info about "Papa John" ?

Just curious - I have seen a couple of people with this variety.  I would like to know more about where it came from, like, a Papa John's pizzeria?  ;)

Seriously though, from Bass' site I see it is a big, dark fig from Greece, the pic of the fruit is gorgeous.  Bass, can you (or anyone else with it) provide more information about this fig?

Thanks!

Jason,

I have this fig. It looks just Bass's photo (He got it from me). I obtained this fig from Petals of the Past. It was a large gallon pot from them. I got about 8 figs the first season. This will be it's second season. I like the taste. Not the best nor the worst but descent . Only time will tell, hopefully better. It seems to be a quick grower. One of the first to produce figs for me last year zone 6 A/B . I think that you will enjoy it.

I only got a couple figs on mine, and they were good. I got one from petals of the past and another from Ricci.

The info I got from them is this came from a landscaper or a gardener who's greek. His father John got it from Greece originally. So they called it Papa John. It has nothing to do with Papa John's greasy pizza.
It was it's first year bearing, It could get better with age. It reminded me of Blue Celeste.

Interesting.  I understand the Ricci's comments through yours, Bass.  "Not the best nor the worst but decent".  This is exactly how I felt when eating a locally growing, very ancient Blue Celeste, of which I've sent out several cuttings of around here lately.

I guess my only other mission now is to find out more about Black Yugoslavian / Yugoslavian Black.  All I have been able to locate is Dusan being one of the people who've been an apparent holder of the fig along the way, and I noted about 4 people who are regulars at both forums that also have cuttings.

Thanks for the info on Papa John.  I look forward to hearing updated stories and maybe pictures if you guys can remember to find this old thread and post them come summertime and/or fall when things start ripening.

Jason, Its a large black fig. Splits easy with rain(explode) & lack taste during rainy periods, otherwise quite decent tasting. Hopefully taste improves with age. My tree is in its 3rd season. Hardy - I leave it outside with a few shovel of dirt protecting half of the 15 gal pot. So far, I have not been getting too many figs of it.

Bass

Would you know which part of Greece the fig came from.  Any similarities to other greek figs?

George

Well, apparently Papa John is a good rooter....

That was one of my stinkers this year. Not good in water. Started turning to mush. So I clipped off the top and buried horizontally in 70/30 perlite-soil. It started putting out roots, so I turned it vertically. Has roots but stuck in neutral.

I am getting this fig courtesy of a good friend. Can anyone update their posts please. It may not be good for me if it splits easily but I will try it.

See Papa John
