Info on Smith variety?

Dennis
I currently have all mine in planters so I can bring them in and out depending on weather.

Dennis,
Does the Smith fig give an early or late crop?

Art i think it is early fig. Breba and main crop.

Thanks Eden
Sounds like a nice fig to have.

iIn my limited experience with Smith, it doesn't like to dry out.

nkesh099,

Thank you Bob, definitely something to consider on this variant. I didn't win the auction, but thanks to a generous member here I won't miss out.

I am interested in contacting J.R. about this variety also. Can somebody please share his number/contact info with me as well?

Darn you guys, I keep thinking "OK, I have enough" then somebody describes a fig to die for that might work for me, and then I start thinking I gotta try it. I know I'm preaching to the choir.

Top right

Calvin, I feel ya! I buy 2 then hear about 10 I want. Lol I can pm it to you if someone else doesn't get to it first. (I just obtained it)

my latest policy is don't get figs that i can buy from a nursery. only collect the figs that requires years of waiting before it's readily available on this forum. that cuts down on number of figs that i'm going to collect. of couse, i never listen to myself.

Thank you to those who were helpful. Searching wasn't very effective, I tried that.
Since there is only a couple of people in the US named JR,J.R.,Jr., and I have never ordered from Mr. Robin(s?) how am I to know?

The search they are reffering is the internal search to this site. I just bumped one thread with a link to Mr. Robin's contact info.

As you all read the different opinions on the smith fig,i have to tell all of you what J.R. told me when i asked him what fig he like the best, and he said quote: The one i got in my mouth!!I grow 12 varieties and i do not want any more till i find out how all of these figs taste. So i have to wait a few more years,no maybe next year, everything is looking good this year. J.R. is a cool cat, like him a lot.

Thanks Figluvah, I know everyone who doesn't have J.r's info will be extremely happy to have it.

Luak, good to hear. I hope to make a purchase from him soon! I keep hearing good things about him.

Thank you all :)

Noss, where is your tree?  In ground?  In pot?  If your tree is having a strange or bitter taste, I would recommend checking your soil.  Figs can survive in just about any area but if its soil (aka food) is not good then this can cause a change in fruit production.  The figs could be deformed, the taste could change, etc.  I would change the soil or amendments to the soil and see what happens.

cheers,
