Insect droppings?

So I've been having my battle with fungus gnats, and have mostly gotten rid of them. I've set up a small styrofoam bowl with water and soap, and a fluorescent lamp right above it (about 3 in above the water). I keep it on at night when the lights are out, and the gnats seem attracted to the light and end up drowning in the water. This combined with bottom watering my plants has worked wonders, and  I think there may be 2 or 3 left.

Now today, I was looking at some of my cuttings, and I found something that might be droppings next to one of the drainage holes. I haven't a clue what they might be, so I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before. I've attached a picture next to a quarter for reference.

Thank you!

Mice? Few months ago something dug a whole in one of my indoor potted plants. Set the traps and caught the Ba$tard. I set traps every year in the garage for mice. Last 5 years  maybe 3 or 4 a year. This winter easily over 20.`

Yep, rodents !
Get the traps and set them ready.
Inside a "building" (garage, garden house, house ...), they can dig in the dirt of the pots and disturb the roots of the plants.
You should always leave some traps ready. There are some that some call "have a heart". It is a box, and the beast gets caught inside.
If it is the guinea pig of the daughter, you can spank the beast and give it back :) to the owner.

When mice get into containers they gnaw a drainage hole larger and excavate a pile of potting mix, I think you would have noticed that. Those look like worm castings, too small to be from a mouse.

Thanks Dave, rice is about 1/3" long and mouse droppings 1/4". While what is shown in the first post are about the same length as the width of the quarter, which is 1/16".

Yes! I felt they were too small to be mouse droppings. I'm thinking maybe the fungus gnats are getting smarter. They may be laying their eggs through the drainage holes, and the larvae are eating their way up?

I can't think of any other reason, other than maybe roaches, but I've done a thorough search and nothing on that front.

I'll make you a bet you put one of those sticky traps out with a few seeds right in the center and I guarantee there will be a mouse there in the morning

Dave, that comparison is a good way to see the difference...I didn't realize the difference between mice and rats!

Yes Meg they could be a little pain but they are easy enough to get rid of

Must be 'mini' mouse then ;)
