Instant wire pots any size you want

Pots I lack...

Figs_28.jpg

That's my new Lattarula Italian Honey in a 7" x 7" x 12" wire cloth pot, secured with wire ties and wrapped with glad cling wrap.  The mix is a base of Miracle Grow Potting Soil had leftover from spring planting with added pelletized calcium and oyster shell.  It's under 80% shade cloth with my other new fig trees and some mushroom logs on my back patio.

There is a wire bottom attached and sitting on the board that was used to bend the wire to the 7" sides.  The board seems to be wicking away excess moisture from watering in after potting.

This wire cloth was used mostly for building perch/bait traps awhile back.  If I ever bought another role of wire cloth I would make sure the weave is straight first.  Having crooked wire weave makes trap making almost impossible and not too good for making pots.

I'm curious what the roots will do upon finding the edge of this pot and a few other wire pots of different sizes we have going.  With the plastic removed it should act similar to an air pruning pot but will likely dry out way too fast in hot weather.  I don't know but the roots just might poke right through this thin plastic.  I guess time will tell.  It might be the best thing since BACON :D

Anyway it's a quick and easy instant pot if you have the stuff laying around.

Looks neat, I'd worry about it drying out too fast, and maybe getting the roots tangled all in there when it outgrows it.

It looks like a good idea but in addition to the roots tangling in the screen, I'd also worry about the roots getting exposed to light. Perhaps you should wrap the outside in a darker plastic, or burlap, or something to help block out light?

Wire pots seem to be ok so far.  Removed the cling wrap from this Norman's Yellow and let the air pruning begin...

The wire pot trees seem to be doing just as well as the other pots and bucket plants.  Have watered them twice in the last two weeks since the rain stopped.  All other potted plants got a good soaking yesterday, first watering since rain stopped.  So yes the outside dries and require more water than other pots. I'm sure the water need will increase with plant mass.

I sure hope those root tips die in the air and light. :)
