Interesting fig growers.

Yesterday I took some time to visit a couple fig growers in NJ.
First I visited Bill to see his trees and his growing system. We also traded fig trees.
These trees are definitely large. He dedicates all his time to the fig trees. He has no other fruit trees on his large property.
It was raining the night before, but he still has to water his trees daily, and more than once a day.

Next stop, Bill took me to visit a farmer where Bill first got to taste his first fig. It was Don in west Jersey. He grows about 4-5 different varieties of figs. He also sells fresh figs in season. His varieties are brown turkey, white marseille, celeste, gilette, black greek, and St. Anthony.
He has no success growing figs from cuttings. Rather, he starts all his plants using the air-layering method. You can see all his trees has an air layering going. It's a shame how badly infected those trees with the FMV.

Bass,
it s great you were able to visit Bill and Don, did he mention how many gallons those containers are.
I remember reading about his system a while back that he uses what do you think about it now that you were able to talk to him.
Dons trees i notice has them elevated and they are talll and in smaller containers the ones he is standing in front of.
Overall any information you would like to share about your conversations with these gentlman and also thanks for shareing the pictures.

Actually I like your tree size and shape and the pot size for colder zone locations but I would prefer a little wider base to avoid easy tipping over.
It appears that Bill pots are approx 10-gallon(+) and Don pots, in my opinion,  seem to be somewhat smaller than 5-gallons.

Bill's trees are grown in large containers about 25 Gallon. These tubs are made for water gardening. He sells them for $75. I bought one off of him. What's odd is the soil mix he uses. It's a heavy soil, similar to top soil. That seems to work great for his growing system. I'm not sure if my potting soil that I use will work in this growing system. You need soil that will get moist from the bottom up.

Don's figs are really pricey, the ones in the photos are $100-$150. They're all brown turkey.

Jon,
thanks for posting that link again as i was curious as to the size of his growing containers.

Bass,
thanks for the added information its always nice to see different ways of doing things with fig trees. Thanks so much for the information , i did find it surprising though he needs to water them everyday as in heat of summer mine are about everyother day .

Ottawan his are in the 25 gallon range as my new large ones are in 25 to 30 gallon range they are same diameter but 5 to 6 inches taller.
These are slightly less conical shape than the old ones (still have 1 left) but they are much thicker as i notice the more weight when i turn them by hand sometimes to rotate them in sun .

I really enjoy the  pictures and discussion on different parts of country and so forth so thanks again!

I ended up building a similar growing system with a smaller size pot for one of my Guava trees. I'll have to wait to see the results.
I bought one from Bill as well to try growing a fig in it. Now the hard decision is which variety should I try?
I probably need to plant something that bears heavily normally.
