Interesting Find ...

Congratulations on a successful mission.

That's a scouting mission.  Good work.  Should you choose to go further, try 20- 50 pieces 5 feet long or whatever size will fit in your car.   :)

Aloha, Mike.  Nope, no drones flying overhead.  Just a couple blackhawks buzzing around.  No knock on the door either.  Although, some solar salesmen stopped by earlier.  Gave me a startle.

Aloha, Richard.  Yeah, I wish there was someway to find out who was the last occupants of the unit.  I guess I could go to the base housing office and arouse their suspicions, lol.

Aloha, Philip.  I guess the only way to find out is to make a successful propagation.  I'll post results as they come along.

Bob, that sounds like a dare...Double-dog dare me.  I'll dig up the WHOLE tree and re-pot it right there.

Nate

Lack of fruit scars point to a seedling.

Ah, so it seems...Good observation.  Well, I have cuttings trying to root.  I will post as results come.

Mahalo, everyone.

Nate

If it is a seedling then they will be healthy rootstocks for grafting at least. It might not be getting enough sun or something, it is just odd that there is no evidence of fruit.

Brent, it might be a seedling and it may or may not have fruited before.  There is insufficient evidence to say for sure.  We've only seen a few branches from one area of the tree at one point in time.  Lack of fruit can also be due to absence of adequate light.  http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2229/13/216

Are there caprifigs in Hawaii and wasps for pollination?  I don't recall hearing of them there.

Aloha, everyone.  Okay, I went back today and THIS TREE HAS FRUITS!  For some reason I can't upload the pics though.  They're thumb sized and pear shaped.  The inside, although unripe, had some pinkish-red spreckled center.  I think this just introduced more questions than answers as far as to what variety fig this is.

I slid behind a crack in the fence this time and went right up into the booby-trapped backyard.  There were holes everywhere!  What I thought was 2 trees was in fact only one.  It just had a long branch (about 10 feet) that shot out to the side.  It had found it's way underground and other shoots were sprouting upwards.  There were as many as 3 different areas I could see where this happened.  Unfortunately, I didn't bring a shovel.  But I did bring my pruners!

Nate

Cool, Nate, but keep yourself out of trouble! :)

Here's the pics of the figs.  I want to say they look like Negronne, but not sure.  At this unripe stage, the eye is fairly tight, but when I cut it open, you could smell a sweet pungent aroma.  Anyone have any insight?

Cool! They are not ripe yet clearly but look like edible to me (common fig). I do not believe they are male, but I might be wrong.

Negronne are dark purple skinned.

It does not look a bad one. Nor it seems a wild (male).
Hope it will be ready in one or two weeks for tasting, depending on the amount of Sun it gets, and not much rain.
The eye is not sufficiently marked red to indicate a dark fig.
After so many years ?! , some 'birds'  are aware of the proper timing to pick or peck a couple of them.
So, sharp attention from now on is a must

When ripe.These are not.

Looks more like Long Brown Honey to me. The leaves are looking a little different though...

Aloha, everybody. I've gone through the fig varietals database and found a couple of possibilities.  The most likely match is Vista. That being said, I have a few cuttings available from my recon mission. PM me if you're interested.
Mahalo.

Nate

How exciting!

Okay, I have a question, I've read that males don't produce fruit and that they DO, but it's not edible (does that mean it's just gross?)? Which is it? I have two seedlings and, knowing they could be male, and just curious.

PS this is so far my favorite Fig Foraging Story. So who's gonna write the book? "Forever Fig Foraging - Untold and All True Stories of Fig Lovers." :)

those if they get dark could be Melintzanas long variety. wow, 7 lobes.. long fruit, green, closed pinkish eye, pink pulp with red speckles, long thick-genly tapered neck, very short or no stalk...hm... that variety list should be ready any day now... I bet it can be handy to have one.

Can we call this beauty "Pearl Harbor Fig" for now? until we figure out what truly it is.

Awesome! I love it. The suspense in figuring out what it is. Man, now I want to go fig hunting!!

jujigirl, have you taken a long walk at Los Angeles riverbank lines? (well not now but when waters subside) take a nice long walk with your hubby and you'll see what a beautiful hidden paradise it is with running water (don't touch it, nevertheless dare drinking it) with aquatic birds all around relaxing, bamboos, you'll even see lots of vegetables growing loosely...and of course you'll find Fig trees, some Capri, some Female...it's amazing...Take the Brand Blvd from Glendale and go south until it becomes Glendale, just before the old white bridge, park near the restaurant (steakhouse on your right hand side) and walk to the parking lot and climb the gentle hill that will take you towards the river...a whole new world will open up in front of you once you get to the top of the hill, as you enter the fences turn Left and you'll see Fig trees... those are Capri...but every where else you will see female fig trees...they all fruit regardless of gender.

Oooh, Melintzanas sounds so exotic!  I like the idea of Pearl Harbor Fig better though.
I really want to find out the history of this fig!  Who put it there, when did it get planted there, what type fig it is, where it came from, and how it got there.

Aloha, all around.

Nate

Nate , just ask the maintenance people on the property... walk up to them and ask ;)

   @ Nate.
Seeee, I have "Melanzana long type" on my wish list. [image] jk,  I seriously doubt you will have any extra cuttings but does anyone know where I can get  Melanzana long type?

You deserve to be in the fig rescue hall of fame.  I think Pearl Harbor fig sounds great!!!!

Aloha, everyone.  The cuttings have taken root (pics taken last week) and are now in 1 gallon pots!  Buds are wanting to break out, but still shy, I guess.  I went back to the original tree and the remaining figs are not quite ready yet.  They're still the same color, so probably not a Negronne cultivar.  But in the meantime, the Pearl Harbor fig lives!
