Intro (Beginner)

Hello everyone!

I am new to the forum and am really excited to get more involved in the world of figs.  Now I must admit I am a beginner in terms of figs trees.  I love growing vegetables and have been doing it for a while.  I live in NYC and want to start something new.  I have done a lot of research online and am so glad to have found this forum.  So here is the big question! Could anyone on this forum provide me with cuttings to start?  I would be so grateful!

Thank you!

York, we will be coming into cutting season in a few months so keep your eyes open for offers on the forum.  There are lot of folks from the NYC area on the forum.  I'm sure many of them will be pruning their trees around late November or so.  That would be an opportunity to get cuttings without dealing with postage and handling and to meet fellow forum members.  I got my first cuttings from someone local and it worked out great.

Oh ok awesome! Thanks so much for the info!

Hello York,
Don't forget to keep your eyes open and you'll soon develop an eye for spotting fig trees that are right under your nose,.  Those varieties are survivors in your area and will probably do well for you.  Some of the members have inquired of the owners of fig trees and have received cuttings even developed lasting friendships. Such a fig is Dominick's fig.    Its a nice story about a fig and a friendship.  It was introduced by member Coop951 who generously offered cuttings in memory of his friend Dominick.  I was one of the lucky recipients . In late fall I will be sharing 1 gal plants of the Dominick fig and others.  It was grown in NJ 7a. if you are interested, please send a pm of your address.

Welcome York, just be patient and you will find that members are very generous when cuttings are available.

Welcome York

Thanks so much guys!

Welcome York.

Welome York. I am in queens. PM me and I will hook you up with cuttings.

Welcome to the F4F forum.  As a new fig grower last fall, I found lots of opportunities for getting either low priced cuttings here or cuttings for the cost of shipping.

York you've certainly found the right place! Trust me these are good people and they take their figs real serious lol.

Welcome!

Welcome!  We have members who scour Brooklyn and Queens looking for new fig trees.  What part of NYC are you in?  Do you have 50 acres in Manhattan?  :)

Seriously, though, clear your schedule for Saturday Sept 6 and go to the event listed here

You can get great figs for your area and learn a lot.  Click on the invitation to make it bigger

50 acres in manhattan lol...

I wish I could make that flemington event... its pretty far from the city :(

There are 2 other events coming up at Bill's figs and 2 others at different places:

The Staten Island Fig Fest will be held at Veranda's at Silver Lake Golf Course at 915 Victory Blvd., Staten Island, NY on September 15th at 7:00 pm.

Tim Drag has invited anyone interested to come to his home, in Chester NJ. Sunday October 5th for his 2nd fig meet and greet. Start time 10 AM. Burgers, hotdogs and beverages will be provided, bring food if you wish. Bring any fig starters or cuttings or any other plant material for trades or raffle. Wife and kids are welcome. Tim lives about 20 minutes from Bill's Figs and Italian Figs and about 50 minutes from Bass if you would like to visit any of them. You can send me {BLB} a PM for details or contact Tim (Slingha) at Yuku

Welcome. From another beginner

Welcome!
Good luck! Try getting a honey variety and a berry one. Good for starters ;)

York29-

Welcome to the forum and to the best grouping of teachers that available.  Members on this forum will guide you through every step of the way, and you'll have trees by next year.  Seriously think about attending the upcoming fig events at Tim Drag's house in New Jersey and the fig even hosted by a fig grower named Bill of Bill's Figs.  Both places are about 1 hour away from the NYC area.

Forget cuttings for now....go for the trees.  You'll have plenty of time to play around with trying to root cuttings.  If you are as impatient as I was, you'll want to get the oldest trees possible so that you get figs, fast!  The two events that I just mentioned will get around the right people and the right trees.

NYC is loaded with good fig trees, and many neighborhoods have dozens of trees growing in yards.  Got a friend/relative with a fig tree?  Learn how to do some air-layering and root yourself a branch that will bear figs next season.  Trees are sold all over the place, and through mail-order, but be selective, and try to buy varieties that will perform well in your area.

Good luck and have fun with figs!  By the way....tell us if you are going to grow containerized trees, and how you plan to over-winter your trees.

Buona fortuna. You have decades of fig obsession ahead.

Welcome, York29, and greetings from NorCal. I'm a rookie also, planting my first fig a year and a half ago. Don't want to scare you, so I won't tell you how many I now have. This is a good forum, happy to have you here.  Gary in CA

Hi and welcome, I am in the area and am always looking to trade cuttings for vegetable seeds and such.  Send me a pm if interested.

STAY AWAY FROM EJP3...... LOL I am seriously just kidding!  Ed is the best!  He and I traded some things I had, for a chicago hardy he had... which started it all off for me!

Ed, by the way... I ended up taking off that lower branch we talked about, and cut it into 4 cuttings.... look what came of that!

Welcome to the forum. You are a beginner now, but I bet you by this time next season, I'm quite sure you will be converted to a veteran whether you choose so or not.
