Introduce myself :)

Hello!

I'm just newly registered to this forum. I am a European guy living in the tropical part of Asia and cultivating figs that I brought here from Europe.

Here in tropical environment figs can be harvested 365 days. Later I will show pictures when I find out the method of uploading them :)

Hello helike

Beautiful pictures helike!! Welcome to the board. Very jealous of the year round growing season, not jealous of the humidity though. Been to SE Asia and the humidity is killer!

looking good, nice and healthy

Welcome!  Your figs look very healthy.  If that striped one is a Panache it may split in the humidity.  I put mine in an organza bag and that protects them from bugs.  They can still fully ripen without souring that way.

Hello helike!

Here you have found many fellow fig lovers all looking to learn more about figs.

Do you find the same figs grow , taste different in Asia from Europe?

In equatorial climate figs must be grown in a conservatory due to the 6000mm annual rainfall which cause root rot for the figs. I am using plastic tunnel with dripping irrigation system.

And actually... Yes, the humidity is very high so the UV radiation from the sun is not as strong as in Europe. When I go to the seaside no need to use sunblock as in Europe. In my fig house I use a kind of plastic roof which "catches" and reflects the UV rays from the sun back to the plants so the sweetness of the fruit almost the same as in Europe. I have good results with grapes also using this method.

Thanks for the warm welcome in the forum. If somebody needs advice growing figs in Zone 13 just ask me :)

Hi helike, welcome.

I'm only in cold zone 12 Hawaii. We have a zone 13 about an hour drive from here with nearly perfect fig growing conditions, for outdoor growing. 2 inches of annual rain fall, year round 80-90 degrees. Where I'm at is 100x more rainfall 201.80 inches. Also growing under cover. What is the name of the plastic you are using for your greenhouse?

Reflective greenhouse film :)

Welcome to the forum, helike

I am now practicing tropical growing but I have experience in temperate growing also. Before I have moved here I was growing my plants in Zone 7... Now Zone 13.

I was doing some repotting today...

Hi, helike13 and welcome. Besides the difference in temperatures, what other adjustments did you have to make moving from zone 7 to zone 13?

Actually my area is regularly flooded between October and January. I loaded 20 trucks of earth on my growing site so my plants never waterlogged. Here the too much rain is a headache, in Hungary is the overwintering. Over there not all varieties can overwinter outside. In cool areas the best strategy to grow fig trees bushy, here rather taller with few branches.

BTW which is the best way to add images here... Imgur stopped working.

And one more... In Europe I was always fighting with scale pests here the giant grasshoppers and snails are headache...

Here is the plastic that I'm using..

Thanks for the pictures of the plastic. I think that is the most common type of greenhouse cover in Hawaii as well.

Great pictures--welcome!

Welcome to the forum, Norbert.  And people thought California was fig heaven!  If you can harvest figs 365 days a year, YOU are in fig heaven. Enjoy!

Tihany, a town near lake Balaton is famous for its lavander.... But the figs are also nice :)
