Introduction

Wanted to say hello and say thank you to all that take the time to make this such a good forum.  I am Doug from Virginia (Zone 7A) and new to figs.

My interest in figs came when I was helping a friend move his brother from St. Michaels on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.   There was a tree in the yard that produced some great tasting green figs.  The people moving knew that I liked to garden and that I was always taking cuttings of different kinds of plants (I have a few rooted cuttings of Myers lemons if anyone is interested).   I wish I had found this forum to learn about fig propagation and made the mistake of taking the tent off too early.  They had rooted but I ended up losing all the cuttings.  I'm hoping to go back and ask permission to take a cutting from the new family that moved in.

The next spring I found a Dwarf Brown Turkey fig at our local Giant grocery store.  Searching the net brought me to this forum and I have been doing a lot of reading.  I’m hoping to start posting as my learning increases.   I recently found another fig enthusiast in Virginia on Craigslist and hope to buy some new figs from him.

Other information about me:  I am married and we have recently adopted two girls from Ethiopia.  I love gardening and anything that grows .   We have a small ½ acre yard which is planted with a family garden, apple trees, cherry trees, peaches and soon more figs.

Thanks again for all the information that is shared in this forum.

Welcome Doug , from a relatively new fig enthusiast too! This is a tremendous info source, people are great and generous with their vast knowledge etc.

LOL buy one fig tree and you're hooked my friend - I know !!!
Have fun and enjoy..

Welocome Doug to F4F.
And don't ever feel bad if you can't stop collecting fig trees. No one can.

Thanks for the nice introduction and all the information!  We all appreciate that!  I would like to welcome you, and hope you enjoy the forum.

Welcome. I am in the Maryland/DC area if you close it would be easy to trade scion.

Welcome to the forum, Doug!

Welcome to the forum dmartin.

Welcome!  We have a lot of members near you.  I'm not one of them  :)  Best thing to do is read a lot here and pick a few great varieties rather than pick some at random.

Welcome to the forum Doug,

Much more important than figs or anything else. You and your wife gave two girls a chance in life by giving them a warm and loving home.

That's awesome in my book.

Doug, welcome to the forum.  I live just across the Potomac from you in Rockville.  I'm slowly becoming acquainted with other fig enthusiasts in the area.  We will have to have a DC area fig meet-up sometime!

Steve

Welcome aboard Doug! Try searching for your USDA Zone and/or State. I was able to find a lot of information about fig varieties for my area and learned which figs do well and which ones not so much. Hope this helps.

welcome to the forum. you will like it here :)

I met Doug and one of his beautiful new daughters today. He's a great addition to our forum and will be/is a great fig guy. For all of you in VA. MD and DC - we need a mid atlantic fig chapter.
Again - welcome Doug.

It was a busy weekend and I’m just catching up on reading the forum.  I wanted to say thank you for the warm welcome that I received  in response to my introduction.  I’m looking forward to becoming a contributing member.

Michael,

Many thanks for the information on fig growing that you shared and your kindness.   My daughter is still talking about your dog with the blue eyes.  Your sixty plus figs are amazing.   It was nice to see plants growing that I had been reading about.   Please keep me in mind if a fig chapter gets started in your area.  I learned a lot the other day and didn’t mind the hour drive.
