Introduction

Hi,
I have joined recent and pretty much been trying to read through old posts, I must sat say this seems a very active and passionate forum.  I am interested in growing various lower care fruit that don’t need spraying.  I have 2 figs given to me by a relative. I am pretty sure the one is Celeste, the other is a green fig with a light center. I will have to ask them when I speak if they know the names.  I am borderline  Zone 6/7 depending on which map I look at. I was just googling a while back researching to find  some that extend season and kept ending up back here at this forum. Both the figs I have fruit around early Aug. and I have been noting suggestions for earlier ones.  Rarity doesn’t matter to me just interested in productive, hardy and of course tasty figs.  The rare holly grail fig postings here somewhat confuse and amuse me at the same time.   Logically thinking with a plant that many find relatively easy to propagate that the more common selections would be some of the better as they would be propagated more. I don’t really view figs like some fruit and vegetables where how they stand up to shipping and shelf live might take priority over taste, but maybe my logic is flawed. Oh well thanks to all for the information provided here.  Now I just need to refine my approach to reading dated posts I was trying oldest to newest, but keep jumping to current, really end up all over the damn place.

Welcome to the forum Pepe! tons of good info and people on here. well worth the time!

and do not mind if you come across some bullies. I did! The benefit of this community outweights anything said(written) that may bother you!  I hope you have as much enjoyment as I do, so far. I have met two amazing fig growers in Seattle (kiwibob and Slavi), had my fig tasting and got cuttings as presents as well as a life time of knowledge... which you don't get in a store or school.

When you feel like trading or just inquire what I have.. I am delighted to trade and to pay forward what I have received with great generosity.

Welcome! Pull your chair comfortably., this fig world is amazing! (Grasa - Seattle, WA)

Hi Pepe and welcome to the forum - it could get pretty wild and passionate around here!!  One thing you should do is go into the control panel and add your climate zone and city/state so forum members would be better able to help you and answer your questions.  Also someone from your area may contact you and then you could have a fig friend close by!

Here your logic for fruit taste being worth more then shipping is definately not flawed.  Most of the members here value variety of taste, looks and even the difficulty in growing.  Many are proud of the more difficult to grow figs because they are difficult to grow (for whatever reason) and it is an accomplishment to be able to root, grow and bring to fruit that which is rare and/or difficult.

One more thing - names will drive you nuts!  It is a crazy fig world trying to figure it all out.

Welcome to the forums, Pepe.  There are lots of great people here.  You can learn a lot from them and make some new friends at the same time.   I did.

Hello Pepe,

Welcome to the forum. I would recommend reading posts by herman2 he has posted lots of information on figs for our zone. He has been trialing varieties for in ground planting. I have also been searching for hardy and productive varieties for zone 6, and the LSU varieties and Improved Celeste have done very well for me this season. I started with figs this year because I was also looking to grow low maintenance fruit trees (my apple and peach trees require too much labor and chemicals for edible fruit). Good luck with the fig experience.

Pete welcome to our world of figs. The generosity of
The members is awesome.

I'll add my welcome too!  Thanks for the nice introduction!  Nice to have relatives that share with you!  We aren't related, but we are a big family here, and cuttings get traded all the time!  Have fun!

Hello Pepe,

Great intro and welcome to the forum.

Hello Pepe welcome to this wonderful forum! You are so right about the caring and passionate people here. Generosity and real caring of one another as I have seen first hand has been amazing and heart warming! The breadth of knowledge and willingness to share is awe inspiring.
You've come to the right place !

Welcome!

Thank you all so much. Yes like Pete my apples and peaches  frustrated me, and I did put some work into them with little return. I think will be trying persimmons next, but so far figs have been wonderful to me son here I am.

What figs are you looking for? I will have cuttings later this fall and I have a fair amount of paying it forward to do. As others have mentioned the generosity among forum members is great.

Welcome!

welcome to the forum pepe.. the hold grail of the fig, the king.. the one and only Black Madeira? or some other one? this fig will grow almost everywhere, and long as the owner can provide the right condition to grow it. been said it's hard to root.. hard to grow.. dies on you without notice. but after awhile.. when you have enough fig to give your fill.. it's hard to resist the temptation to grow something that is said to be one of the best tasting fig. not to make dried figs.. not to make fig preserve.. but just to have one taste of it :)

James, Thanks for the offer I will probably  take you up on that offer at some time.

Jo-Ann,  I understand that about the challenge of a harder to grow cultivar I guess but just never thought about fruit in that manner, but I am not at that place yet.

Pete that that made me laugh I think you must have had one to many figs, sounding like Dr. Seuss.  If I was tending Bar I would cut you off.

Im dave and i am new to the figs4fun site. i am however a member in good standing of the gardeningclub nhgc and have been for awhile. as a matter of fact it was on thier forum that i met some one and traded thornless blackberry plants for some blue celest fig cuttings and so began another growing passion. I live in zone 6 illinois and like to grow the things that people around here never hear about such as miracle fruit, pepino melon fruit (rare from chile) <==== the only guy selling live pepino plants on ebay this year. i did have some black sapote aka chocolate pudding fruit but have sold out. and other things like that. i now have five fig varieties and 8 trees, i am working to have 15 varieties and about 35 trees come this time next year. no one here has ever had freash figs and i like all of em that i have tasted thus far. right now i have hardy chicago, blue celeste, brown turkey, purple magnolia, and desert king. hoping to get many many more and learn what i can. and i know everything is a give and take so i have a vast knowladge in cloning, hydroponics, areoponic cloning/growing and working with some plant tissue culture on the side. if i know somthing you want to know just ask.

i don't get addicted to too many things. too lazy, and my attention span is too short to get addicted to anything. and fig is perfect things for people like me to get addicted to. don't have to do much get so much out of it :)

Welcome Dave ! Some of your plants - pepino melon and black sapote sound interesting. A couple members here have expressed interest in tissue culture , can't remember who but I'm sure the subject will be discussed again or you can start it.

Welcome to the forum Pepe.
