Introduction

I just registered today, but I've been lurking for a couple weeks. I live in western colorado (7a) and am brand new to growing figs. I had some fresh figs for the first time in my life about a month ago & have been obsessed ever since.

I was just about to order some cuttings on eBay, but I figured I'd check the forum first to see if anyone had any available for purchase or could point me in the right direction. Thanks

Welcome, I assume you are human and not an actual sasquatch lol. This is cutting season, but customarily we like to get to know new members and wait for them post a bit about themselves before asking for cuttings. Tell us about yourself, what do you grow?

Welcome to the forum, what are you looking for?

Welcome.

Welcome to the forum

I fully understand. I certainly don't want to seem like I'm looking for a handout. I love growing anything & everything, mainly edibles. I don't have any fig trees yet, but I'm hoping to get a collection started.

Welcome to the Forum.....I would start off with trying to root Black Mission, Celeste, Kadota....they seem to root faster than some others.  I would buy on Ebay anything that sells at a low price.  Good Luck...!!!

Thank you all for the pointers and the warm welcome.

Welcome, good to see another Coloradan.

Welcome. Go Colorado! What area of western CO?

I live in Clifton, CO. I've placed bids on black mission & black jack. I'm planning to do a "buy it now" on some Celeste tomorrow (payday)

Welcome...it's good to know that even sasquatches like figs!

Consider adding your location and zone to your signature line.

What are your fig growing plans...figs in pots or in ground with protection?  In zone 7a you should have some nice options for growing in ground.

Several folks here on the forum should have figs available for purchase.  If you have any trouble getting in touch with the right folks drop me a note.

I'd be happy to take some cuttings for you, but I know of better sources since most of my trees are too small at this point and therefore my varieties for cuttings are limited.

Black Jack doesn't get the best reviews from people in cooler areas. It seems to do well in Texas from what I've read. It all depends on how much land you have to grow on and how many trees you are going to grow. But, how many trees you plan to grow is sort of a stupid statement...because this is very addictive and most people end up with at least 3x what they thought they wanted.  I would also opt for Imroved Celeste(O'Rourke Not) from someone like Herman2 on eBay, these cuttings are affordable and the tree does not drop fruits prematurely like regular Celeste.

Any of the varieties you could get from Herman would be good choice for you and are going to do well in your zone.

I would start off with some hardier cultivars like Florea and Black Marsellies VS so you can plant them inground. If I were you I wouldnt get Black Mission and Black Jack because they prefer a climate like California. Not the mountains of Colorado. But if you do get enough heat I would do them BUT Black Mission and Black Jack will have a hard time if you plant them in ground.

I appreciate all of the input. I'm probably going to keep them in pots for a while, since I haven't formulated a master plan for my landscaping yet. Hopefully by then I'll have a good idea which varieties to plant in ground.

Squatch,

Check on this post for fig tree and cutting e-bay sellers.

Welcome!  We promise not to mess with you.  Hardy Chicago, Desert King and Nordland are other good ones for your area.  They'll fruit with a short season.  Grasa is giving away cuttings (for the cost of postage) that should probably do well for you.  See if she has any left.

Thanks for the suggestions (& for not messin' with Sasquatch). I've got Marseilles VS coming and I'll definitely be getting desert king. I have bids on a couple other cold hardy types as well.
