Introduction

Hello. Just thought I would introduce myself.

I am a college student at the University of Missouri working towards a degree in sustainable agriculture. I do a lot of gardening and experimental growing. I've recently become fascinated with figs and worry an addiction is starting:) I suppose I will be doing a little bit of experimenting but I will be growing all the trees in the ground here in Missouri. I have bought some cuttings to try my hand at rooting and might buy an established tree or two once it warms up. My list includes the following:

Black Bethlehem
Violette de Bordeaux
Chicago Hardy
Marseille VS Black (If I can get for a reasonable price)

I've spent the past couple days doing research and exploring the forum so I thought I'd finally join and introduce myself. Thanks guys!

Nathan

Welcome, Nathan!
I am sure you will find those varieties.
Good luck with your research, sounds very exciting

Welcome,Nathan,

Your going to need a second job to pay for your fig tree addiction.
Best of luck rooting your fig tree cuttings.

Welcome Nathan.

I started growing figs when I was in college as well. It can be a pain with all the moving so be sure to think about nice sturdy potting containers when you get to that stage. Good Luck this season and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the best sport out there. Figging is a sport. Lol

Welcome to the forum from a fellow Missourian.

Welcome to the forum Nathan.

Welcome!  Do you know Mark Brown?  He does a "lot" with urban farms, aquaponics, etc.

those are good choices for figs.  I would pick up a Salem Dark, (JH Adriatic and/or Battaglia Green), Desert King, St Rita and Ronde de Bordeau as well.  If you have a season extender, Col de Dame Gris and Panache would be good, too.

Welcome Nathan!

Nathan,
Welcome to THE forum, where it all happened :)

Welcome to the forum!

Hi Nathan, welcome.  Good topic of study; our agricultural system need more folks like you!   Sustainability is also an interest of mine, and I try to incorporate those principles into our life whenever I can.  Best of luck with figs, this is a great time to acquire cuttings from all those pruning back their plants!   Careful though, it IS addictive, and there's many well-intentioned enablers around here;)

Hi and welcome.

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome Nathan.  Get in touch if you get to the Springfield area.

Bob- I am not familiar with the name Mark Brown. Maybe I'll ask one of my advisers here. She has a ton of connections with farmers around the state.

Welcome Nathan! Good luck with your figs

Mark Brown's a great guy and has allotments all over the St Louis area.  You can go to his FB page and introduce yourself if you want.  He's very friendly.  He and a few others run Gateway Garlic Urban Farm.  He's given rural farmers enough GMO-free corn to convert their farms to GMO free when they couldn't find enough non-GMO to do it themselves.  He's given away his organic produce to the poor, brought free produce to Ferguson after the shooting and sells to high end chefs.  All in all quite a guy.

Welcome, Nathan!

Welcome from another newbie. There is so much great information here.
