Introduction

Hi.

My name is Edgar and am new to the forum. I am from the DFW area (zone 8b) and started to grow figs this year as a new hobby. I currently have two varieties (Celeste and Brown Turkey) growing right now in pots. The Celeste I got from a local nursery and the Brown Turkey from eBay.

I'm looking very forward to learning and sharing with everyone here.

Welcome!

Thanks and look forward to contributing where I can.

Hi Edgar, I'm in the area also!  There are a few here on the forum.  Do you have any in the ground?  I bought my first tree 5 years ago at Calloways.  It was labeled Celeste and turned out to be LSU Purple!  We have a great climate here for figs.

Edward, turn and run now!!  Save yourself while there's still time...   we've all crossed over to the dark side and are now lost causes.   (I only started down this dark path at Thanksgiving, and I now have had over 110 varieties follow me home.)   One other forum member here told me this morning that his wife had stumbled upon his secret hoard of figs and he's now sleeping outside with them.

  Consider yourself warned!!!!     LOL!!!

Jo-Ann, I don't have any figs in the ground yet. The Celeste I got from Calloways which I transplanted into an approx. 5 gallon pot. Its got about a dozen buds beginning to open up. Will have to wait and see if it is truly a Celeste. I plan to put it into the ground maybe in the fall.

Welcome!  Make sure you take a look at the section about the different varieties too--it's a great resource!

Ed, why in the fall??  If you have a spot I would do it ASAP!!!   Just remember to add a lot, I mean A LOT of organic matter to hole you dig for it.  Mine is a tiny bit higher then the surrounding area.  Here's a picture of it from when I first planted it in 2012 and now - I made a mistake earlier, this will
be the 5th season I've had it.

When I first put in the garden, I dug and tilled the area from inside the black edging - about 2' (going to expand it a little this year), and back up toward the house by the rope and down the side of the house.  A friend helped and ran the tiller  -  talk about labor!!  The next year I put in the raised beds - should have done that from the beginning instead.

I wanted the roots to develop a little further and also haven't yet decided where it is gonna go into the ground quite yet. I may put it into the ground in early summer - will keep everyone updated.

Welcome to the forum, Edgar!

Welcome!  Best of luck with your plants.

Welcome! I'm in zone 7b and trialing a bunch of figs documented on my blog.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.
