Introduction and.... SHaring cuttings in Ontario?

Hood morning everyone! First post here, thought i would introduce myself!

I'm a total rookie when it comes to growing figs, Just purchased two small fig trees cv "brown turkey" from a local nursery here in London, Ont. I've always loved figs (dried) and recently learned that they can be grown in SW Ontario!
I just ordered a few varieties from Richters, (shortly after the order was confirmed i found a few negative reviews from this company....sigh).
Hopefully, within a few years, i will have my first crop of figs from these tiny plants!

I was wondering, do hobby growers in london have any sort of network for selling/trading cuttings of different varieties?

thanks everyone !

Welcome to the forum!

I am 30 mins north of london in Exeter and just getting into growing figs this past few years. There are a few of us in the london area as well as the GTA/Niagara region.

Hello & welcome

Not to brag, but Canada has a multitude of fig collectors with impressive collections.
The big centres seem to be Montreal, S. Ontario & B.C.
Tylerj is in your area & has an impressive collection and there many just a stones throw from you.
Get active on the forum & check past topics of interest & make contacts.
good luck & happy figging.

Welcome! I also live in the same city as you.   This was my first year of growing figs from cuttings and I received/purchased cuttings from other forum members.

Last Sept. I purchased 8 varieties of fig plants from Brugmansia (Quebec) and I was very pleased with them.  Last Nov./Dec. I ordered another 8 plants which I should be getting in the next few days.  Unforturnately I recently found out that 3 of the plants that I ordered were unavailable and I had to choose 3 other ones or get my money back. No Black Madeira or Petite Negri for me!

I should mention that Home Depot (at least in the north end) has Hardy Chicago plants for $25 - good size.  Of course I had to buy one.

Hi Everyone!

Wow! To be honest, I didn't expect 3 replies so soon! let alone, people in the same city! Is there a social media group or anything? or a canadian subforum here?

Angela: I will look at brugmansia and see what they have. I have no problem supporting local growers who root cuttings, or a business... I already have things to grab from home depot so i will look at the hardy chicago today

Yes, Brugmansia is good place for Canadian for rare variety, and Its price is quite fair too, I ordered 8 plants at Jan/Feb  and should be getting 5 only, sorry, I can not gift extra one to my friend,  no MVbs this year, I hope they sell RDB again next year just like 2 years ago.

I ordered "Grandthams Royal" from local grower, it took me $11 park and go, $17.5 ferry, $2.5 Bus, and 11 Hour time, to pick it up,  I hope that it is really great tree for our cool summer area.

I am looking for few good fig trees bearing sweet fig here, you need to decide that how far you want to go for this project.

Also, if you plant your fig trees in ground, Try to plant them deeper, it will increase its cold hardy.

Welcome aboard. I'm in (as the handle suggests) in Toronto. I would't worry too much about your purchase from Richter's. There may very well have been a few mistakes made. I myself bought two trees from them. The customer service IMO leaves a bit to be desired and the shipping a bit on the slow side however the trees did show up and appear to be the correct variety. I wouldn't bother with their "Colosso" series. They're still first year trees...

There are tons of fig growers in southern Ontario. I recommend you venture out into the Italian neighbourhoods (Spelled in Canadian) to search for those backyard treasures. When you see a garden with hockey stick trellis, it's time to stop and take a peek. (local thing)

If you want to buy named cultivars, Dany at Brugmansia is a good guy with good trees....

Pino (above) is close, has an abundance of great trees. He's a wealth of knowledge on growing in our area - Not to mention a very pleasant person. If I were you, Pino would be my first stop. Ask him about his Ciccio Nero. It does really well around here. Also, you have to see his Dalmatie. You want to eat the pictures....

If you ever wish to trade cuttings or talk about growing in our area, I have 35 +or- types that range from named varieties to backyard treasure finds.... Send me a PM any time.

Another place with a pretty good rep is Flora Exotica. I've never ordered a fig from Perry but a couple of Arbequina olive trees that came fast and in wonderful condition.

Thanks everyone :)

ricky, sounds like quite the journey for some plants! There's definately a lot of planning that needs to be done, especially with the "how far do you want to go..." , sortof like tumbling down a rabbit hole :)

Simko,

There is someone in north London who sells fig trees, mainly unknown varieties.  I just bought one tonight that was about 5 feet tall for 30 dollars and it had lots of brebas on it.  I have no idea what it is other than it's a white fig. His plants vary in size and price.

If you are interested send me a PM and I will tell you where he is located.
