Introduction and where to find genovese nero

Hi, I'm new here and we (hubby and I) are new to fig growing and though we have only a few trees we're already addicts LOL! So first a friendly hello, it's so great to find this community of fig lovers, now I don't feel crazy :)

Anyway, I'm looking for genovese nero, but it seems to be one of rarer varieties. The problem seems to be two-fold...first, finding this variety and second, finding someone who will ship to Canada.

We are in Canada but south of Vancouver, very close to the border with Washington state, so our climate is pretty mild and so far we have pretty good success growing figs.

If anyone has any suggestions for a source for this yummy sounding variety I would appreciate it very much. Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!  It's always nice to have a new member in the group.  I am not familiar with genovese nero so I can't help you with it.  If someone out there has it I am sure they will let you know.   Don't forget about Encanto Farms Nursery, Jon may know of it.  What varieties are you growing?  Crazy? Who's crazy? I don't know anyone crazy!  Crazy? Who' s crazy?............

Hello Dandymandy, welcome to the fig forum.
You might want to call Adriano at adrianosfigtrees.com about Genovese Nero and see what he can do for you.
I tried emailing a bunch of times this fall and last winter and got no answer.
Maybe someone who lives near Adriano can help you get this variety.
I'm looking for it too.
Hope this helps.

adriano in canada is the original source for most of the Genovese Nero on forum. since you are in canada, he would be the best person to get in contact with. the GN is rather new on the forum. there are members who has GN, but rather young to produce good enough cuttings for sharing.

Welcome to the forum from Southern California.  We have many Canadian members, so I'm sure you'll be able to find that variety within your country.  I know your border patrol is tough!  Snowbirds come here and rent some of our neighbor's homes during your cold winters, and I'm always friendly, offer appetizers, and they all leave their leftover alcohol for me because the border patrol will confiscate.  I imagine that would happen with figs too!

Good luck to you!

Darn mounties... lol

Yes, our mounties take their duties very seriously! I thought of looking into the import regulations as hubby has a few relatives south of the border and we were thinking it could be shipped to them and they could perhaps send it on to us after taking care of the appropriate paperwork. I have to admit I'm not familiar with exactly why the commercial nurseries won't ship to Canada, but if it's because of onerous amounts of paperwork rather than a quarantine, then this might be a solution...especially if we could get some our Canadian beer down to the American branch of the family to "lubricate" the wheels and put this in motion lol!

We did see the genovese nero listed on Adriano's site, but the site says he's not shipping and you have to pick up. That would be quite a ways for us to go, but I hadn't thought of asking someone close by to pick one up and ship it out for us. If anyone knows of anyone near enough and willing to do so, we would gladly pay the shipping of course, plus fair compensation for the time and trouble.

Thanks for the warm welcome, and I look forward to learning and sharing!

Hello,
I can ship to Canada but it requires a phytosanitary certificate at the cost of $35 for one or more trees. It is the same price regardless of the amount of trees. If interested email me.
