1) If you have some idea of how many gallons you use when hose watering, then figure from there. I am going to guess that you need about 1/4-1/2 gallon of water per gallon of soil.
2) Turn the system on for 30 min, and see if that is enough water to begin to emerge from the drain holes. If not, turn it back on for another 30 minutes, and repeat till you get watere out the bottom of the pot. That should give you a pretty good idea.
3) A little over watering shouldn't hurt them, because of the ability of the pot to drain (as opposed to being in ground)
4) If they get some water, even if it is a little shy, they should be fine for 8 days. Some is definitely different than none.
