to have Fig Envy?
In just the few days I've been a member of this forum, I'm in awe. I've seen dark figs as big as my fist, I've seen "fig test plots" to die for, I've marveled over collections of 50,65,120, and 150 varieties......and the number is growing! I've seen pics of protecting insulating shelters, pics of trees in winter protection that blow my mind, fig cutting nurturing stations that leave me in amazement. And I thought that those of us in the BBQ and Fly Fishing Communities are rabid! What a gregarious and wonderful group of folks. I've already received cuttings of two cultivars, with offers of others. I am humble and honored to see your dedication to figs.
BUT
dagnabbit I have fig envy real bad! I have 1 and 1/2 trees, but with future clones on the way, if the cuttings take. I'm wide-eyed and as giddy as a teenaged girl thinking about testing different variety of figs, but then reality sits in. As much as I want, I don't have the room to grow many trees - too much shade. So what do I do - cut down lots of decades old shade trees, or do I convince the wife we really do need to move, or do I convince the local community garden to allow me some room to grow figs at their place? Then I think of the climate and how many should be in pots and then I think of watering, shade and where to winter the potted trees during the winter. I'm befuddled, my mind hurts from thinking of all the possibilities and dead ends. But in the meantime, I will continue looking at all ya'lls (thats plural for everybody if you are not from the South) posts, and drooling over the fig descriptions from Adriano's World of Figs, NAFEX, and others. And I will continue to have Fig Envy!
