Is it too late?

To start rooting cuttings?

I have some rooting I will cup this weekend, I peeked in on them last weekend and they looked ready but I wasn't  LOL.   Anyway, I think I could get some more going this weekend, they will be ready to cup by Labor Day weekend and that will give at least 2 months growing before the season starts to change.

Do you think that is enough growing time before dormancy sets in?  I just checked my pictures from last year and saw the in ground LSU Purple was still green on Nov 22, and was yellowing in Dec.

I would really like to get some going now but ...... if it's not enough time then it's not enough time.

Also what about an air layer?

Joann...I have never rooted cuttings this late in the season, so I can't help you there, but as far as the air layers, I did a few this Summer...the smaller branches took about 6 weeks to fill up with roots, and the thicker branches took two months(that's with scoring and rooting hormone)...you have a longer growing season than we do here in N.J., so you should have enough time.

joann, it's never too late :) i root cuttings yr around it seems. the problem is not rooting, but keeping them over the winter in secure and optimal environment. i started rooting Conadria about 3 weeks ago. they will go into 1 gal soon. i have Malta Red (?) coming in. i'll be rooting it as soon as it gets here. as long as they have time to root and spend some time in the 1 gal before night temp drop to 45 and below, i don't really see any problem.

JoAnn,

You'll or should I say the figs wil be fine.

I don't think it's too late for either.

JoAnn I did an air layer last year towards the end of August. It took 4 weeks for roots to fill the cup on the tree but I left it on for 6 weeks, just to make sure the roots could support the top growth. I left outside to go dormant with the other trees and turned out fine. You have a longer season than me so you should have no problem. Go for it.

P.S.
The tree I got from you is growing good. ; )
Hope the one I sent you is good as well, if not let know and I'll do an air layer for ya.

Can you bring them inside?   I also root cuttings year around.   If they can be house plants this winter, they'll just keep growing, straight through till Spring.   Fig trees do not require dormancy, nor will they go dormant if left inside your house near a south facing window for light.

BTW...most of your cuttings made it.  I have several small trees in pots with your name still on their little trunks.

Thanks again.

Joann iam with you in the same boat .
i have 50 cuttings and they are slow to root maybe cause they were in fruit phase and not bloom phase.. last cutting are taken yesterday from a park . one thing i learned from my rooting escapades is to wet the soil a bit before using clear cups and not water them at all after. ( maybe a drizzle here and there). i got a lot of gnats this time cause i didnt have time and watered too much.
anyhow i hope we will have a safe winter for these babies ....

I hope it's not too late because I just started 24 unknown cuttings from a friend. Of course I intend on bringing them inside during the winter while they are still small and then back out in the spring.

Yes, overwintering is the issue.  I don't have room in the house to keep them growing.  Last winter I had run into space issues when it came time to cup the cuttings I had started.  I was a bit excited about the prospects of rooting and in the excitement of it all I ran out of adequate window space real quick.

I am confident I will have the ability and the space to keep them outside and well protected, so I guess I will give it a go!
