is it too late?

To put a fig tree in ground?
Been crazy busy with work travel and then flooding kept me from getting a lot of stuff done.
Zone 6b  NW Arkansas.  have a couple 3-4 year old trees in pots that need to go in ground, just haven't had the time yet.  Is it too late?
Thanks
Greg

Personally, I would as long as I could water the fig tree sufficiently.  They should use less water in ground than in a pot.

I put several in the ground a couple weeks ago from one gallon pots, they are showing lots of new growth now where in pots they were stagnant not really growing.

I just realized your 2 zones colder than me.  It is recommended here for Fall or Spring planting, with Fall planting giving trees enough time to get roots down before the dry summer months.

Since I am unfamiliar with your climate in winter, I'll defer to those more knowledgeable for your area.  Someone will chime in.

Hi Greg,

I'd go ahead and plant them, water them well, and mulch them in.  Then check occasionally to make sure the soil doesn't dry out too much.  Here in Maine we've been having rain weekly so I've had zero problems with late plantings.  You should still have several months for good root growth.

Cheers,
Greg

Last Fall I transplanted a tree from one part of my yard to another and it was fine this Spring.  Well, it had dieback like all the other in-ground trees due to the cold weather but is looking good now.  Just protect the tree as best you can when it goes dormant.

I would go for it!
I am planting 2 more inground in  about 2 days.
They will get much care, water, and tons of mulch.
Best of luck...
Oh, and yes:  Cover them extra well for the winter!   They will no doubt have Die back, but hopefully minimum.

Thanks, I thought it was probably ok if I kept an eye on moisture
