Is my Fig tree dead?

Last year, I was given 3 Fig trees from one of my father's clients who made cuttings from his own trees in his yard.  When he brought them they all had nice green leaves and one even had a little fig already growing.  The client (an older gentleman), said to just leave them out all winter long and they would be okay come spring time ... well, they are still leafless and I'm worried they are now just little sticks in the ground!  I did the scratch test and the bark underneath is green ... so does that mean they are just slow to waking back up?  Should I just water it when the soil is dry and wait until they start sprouting leaves?  Or something more drastic?  Thanks for any help and support!!
(btw, I live in the Northeast / Philly area)
... i'm attaching some quick pics i took of the fig trio, and the scratch test! ...

From that bit of green, I'd say that one is still alive anyway.  But they might be damaged... I don't particularly agree with the advice you were given about how to let them go through the winter.  There are lots of articles on this forum about winter protection  (try a search with the terms "winter" "protection", or some similar terms).  If the roots survived, and with that green, they should awaken.  Give them water and sunlight...  you'll want to water them well (so that it runs right out of the bottom of the pots), but then don't keep them sopping or soggy... before you water them again you should let them get to the point where the soil is just slightly moist (stick a finger into the dirt to check).  I hope this helps... and good luck!

Mike

p.s.  for winter protection, you'll need to keep them out of the wind, and possibly a bit warmer.  Do you have a garage or shed?

Mike is right.  They really needed some winter protection.  But Mother Nature works wonders.  As cool of a spring as we have had here in Arkansas, I bet they have not woke up.  Mikes advise is what you should follow. Especially try to protect them from the cold nights you probably are still having.

I bet you will be surprised...

That's a great idea. Don't over-water and they should be fine. I put a few trees outside to see if the were hardy and all of them survived. There were several days of freezing temps and even snowed but they're fine now.

My in-ground figs (Zone 6) typically wake up toward the end of May.  This year's record cold May may delay them even more.

Thank you everyone!  I appreciate your fast responses :)  They are well fed today and I'm crossing my fingers they will wake up soon.

Mike - Thanks!!  I will look into winter protection for these babies ASAP!  The older gentleman was just so adamant about leaving them as is during the winter, and of course I knew nothing about fig tree care prior to this, that I just took his word on it.  If they indeed survive, i'll definitely be following your advice at the end of the season.  Thank you!
