Is my Fig tree dying? UPDATE!

Oh no Pami! Are you guys ok?

Noss, thanks, that's a great idea.

Noss,  Gia, thanks- we're fine.  We have had a brief thunderstorm already today, but

no severe weather warnings yet.  Local TV stations are breaking in every 30 minutes
give updates but so far everything is OK.  We've had 1.5" of rain in the past 24 hours
(including the 0.6" that I mentioned earlier) and they are forecasting strong storms this
afternoon.  My prayers go out to those hit with worse weather than we have- nobody
injured here- just some power outtages, broken limbs in roads, etc.

Hi Pami,

So glad to hear from you and that you are all right.  I'll keep everyone in my prayers.  Keep letting us hear from you, OK?  :)

I want to thank everyone who answered my questions regarding my fig tree. It came back to life! It's leafy, full and absolutely beautiful. It doesn't have any fruit since it's late in the season but I have high hopes for next Spring. I will post some pictures to show you just how much it bounced back.

Here are the pictures as promised.

Beautiful plant with lots of will to live!

Job well done!

Congratulations! Good job!

Thank you Figluvah! It took a while but it bounced back. I took the advice of everyone here and just watered it when it needed it and pretty much left it alone. Now I just need the patience to wait until next Spring for some yummy figs.

Thanks Ken!

Good job saving your tree, Gia! Your MIL must be very impressed with your efforts. Do you know the variety?

Thank you Ruben. My MIL hasn't seen it yet but I've told her how much it's come back to life. I'm hoping she visits before the Fall. I have no idea what kind of fig tree this is. I was hoping someone would take a guess but it seems to me that the leaves are all very similar and it would be hard to say without the actual fruit. I also want to give my MIL a cutting but have no idea how to go about that. Do I just cut some of the bark off? and do I do it now or in the fall when the tree is going into it's dormant stage?

Gia,

At this point, in your zone, I would wait until just before Spring to start any cuttings. You will need to prune off your cuttings from one of the woody branches of your dormant tree. Make sure the tree is not exposed to temps below 30 degrees this winter or you may be taking cuttings from a dead limb. Here is one of the many resources you can use to learn how to propagate fig cuttings. There are many ways to skin this cat but, bottom line up front, do not over-water your growing medium. That is the most common cause of failure. http://figs4fun.com/Rooting_Bag.html

Good luck and feel free to ask questions!

Thank you Ruben! I was going to put the tree in my basement come Winter time.

Wow Gia!  When you see the "before" pictures, and then look at where the plant is now....wonderful job with it!      You will have to keep us posted next season, hopefully it will fruit for you & the forum can try to figure out what plant you have!

Thank you Sara, I can't wait until next season :). I was hoping all the wonderful people here can help me identify the kind of fig I have when it's ready. I'm so excited!
