Is there a University in Canada like UCD that supplies cuttings ?

Being a newbie at this  I was wondering if there was somewhere in Canada like UCDavis that ships cuttings for people.

I know UCD will ship internationally but i wouldn't even know where to begin to get the proper paperwork from the govt.

No..because figs can't be grown outdoors here in Canada for mass production (acres of mature trees to offer cuttings from) like they can in California.

Dany @ Brugsmansia nursery out of Quebec offers cuttings for sale in the fall though.

Thanks for the reply Tylerj. I was thinking maybe somewhere a little warmer like out west. Dany from Brugmansia is amazing. I have a few plants that will be shipped from him here this spring.

Hi,
Well the problem is perhaps another one.
And the question that comes often to my mind is: Why/how is ucdavis doing that ?
I mean, here if you want a fig tree, you get it from someone, or you buy one at a nursery .

In the country of the capitalists ... having Ucdavis which is not a commercial business spreading material sounds really bizarre to me ...

I don't think there are Ucdavis anywhere else in the world, and here in France, we don't have one - or it is really well hidden .
Especially because Commercial Businesses would complain and fill in a pursuit against the state for Unfair competition .
USA being the land of lawyers ... Sometimes things are funny :) . But I'm not complaining, just jealous :)

I got a bunch of little figs trees shipped from Brugmansia-Québec last season, they looked great right out of the box and the prices were good too. More on the way this spring as well.

@JDSFRANCE Most Nurseries here sell full size tree's..... There really is only one person who is selling small plants and that is Dany @ Brugmansia. The other nurseries usually have 2 yr old trees or older on sale. A 2 yr old unknown variety will run you about 60$ CDN. A mature tree always of the unknown variety will run you over 100$. I would also assume many of the nurseries in the USA actually get cuttings from UCD themselves. So i don't think they would complain too much.

@FLUFFYBUNNY I have a few myself that i ordered from him. Delivery will be sometime in May or June. It's good to know we at least have somewhere to go with Dany to get authentic plants at a good price. With that said there is something to be said about propagating your own cutting and growing the plant to maturity. There is a level of satisfaction and pride that goes along with it as well.

For whatever reason a fruit will always taste better to the owner when they actually brought that tree up from nothing as opposed to buying a mature tree. I am sure many people from this forum would say the same thing.

Thanks for the replies it's truly appreciated.

There is also Adriano's

@milehighgirl I wish he still shipped out cuttings. He's local pick up only :(

Road trip!

Worth the road trip. You won't regret meeting our Cdn fig guru but surely U will
leave in AWE.....& if U lucked out, you may get to leave with some real nice variants
and sample some rare figs if visitation timing is right.

Saint Leonard's is load with Italians. Maybe you could go on a fig hunt and discover some new variety .

All great idea's. I'm thinking road trip might just be called for. I may just learn a few things. They've also got some amazing peach trees
down that way. Niagara falls isn't far from there either hehehe.
Thanks for the suggestion.

@deerhunter16b that's also a great idea but alot of them also guard their trees with shotguns. I might take a bullet just for looking lollll.
I did hear about this one guy who apparently has had a tree for 16 years unprotected and it's survived every year. I saw some pictures
of the supposed tree on the net and it's a beast. I have no idea how it can possibly survive our winters. Especially one like we're having
this year. I'm sure many of you also felt it this year.

Correction to my last post. I reread the article and it clearly states he would dig out a portion of the roots and bury the tree.
