Is this a Black Mission?

I found this local ad. The figs look like the Black Mission (well... many black figs look similar) but the leaves are shiny..I've seen only non-glossy Mission leaves.Any idea what variety that can be? I may stop by to get some figs and maybe a cutting or two

They probably sprayed something on the leaves to make them look like that.  Seems odd since they are advertising organic figs...  Maybe they just washed the leaves and they were still wet?

Igor,

If you could get us some close up pics of the leaves themselves we could get a better idea.

The glossiness of the leaves is odd for any common fig unless it is rained on recently.

No rain for the past 2 months :)
Would be nice to have some though.
If/when I go, I'll post a photo of the fig's inside.
But... even the wet BM leaves shouldn't be that shiny , right?

That is a really odd picture to be that shinny without some kinda oil.

looks like the leaves were taken off and dressed for the photo shoot.

Those certainly look like Black Mission, but as has been already said need more information. The product they applied to the leaves is called probably "Leaf Shine". It is used by florists to dress up plants for sale. I worked at a local nursery in my teen & college years and they used this same product for dressed plants for funerals.

So, I went to pick those figs today. Here is what they are ...

The dry facts first:
The leaves are NOT glossy, the photo on the craigslist post is an optical illusion. The feel on touch and shape is similar to a very common fig leaf, a bit hairy, like a Black Mission, for example, nothing special.
The figs are dark, almost black, large and juicy. The closest taste is that of a VdB for me but the figs are much larger, very good taste. The eye is closed. I got 2 lb, that was 17 figs.

Now the fun part:
My name of the fig would be a "Black Lebanese" . The fig tree arrived from Lebanon 15 years ago, the owner is Lebanese also and he treats the tree like a family member. It is in the most immaculate and manicured condition. I have not seen any dry or wilted or any with brown edges leaves. If the trees in Lebanon are treated this way, I can understand why the figs taste so great! They reward the owners for the time and care spent with them.
I asked for a cutting but ... the owner said that it is a bad thing to give the parts of the tree away since you are giving away a part of its soul ... and since it is a family member well... you got the idea.
so I unless something changes, I don't expect any cuttings.

So, we have a Yellow Lebanese, a Red Lebanese and here is a Black Lebanese!

Igor,

Ask him about when he prunes the tree.

For at this time one be the best chance of getting any limbs for he either chips them or throws them away.

His soul is now for sale on eBay! :)  http://www.ebay.com/itm/251769903845

Igor,
We know the guy on eBay, LOL

I already bought a pair from a prior auction last night shortly after it went live and I've confirmed it's the same guy and he's a photographer, thus the nice photos.  Mine are already on their way! :)

That's a good lookin' fig right there

That's very funny!!!

I've eaten those figs too, they are delicious.
I might help him trim the mother tree for the first time in her life.
He was told to believe that one should NEVER trim the Fig tree.
Well, as he agreed, my brought up point was that the tree had become a bit of a challenge to gather the fruits from...
So...maybe, she'll get a nice haircut soon.

the owner said that it is a bad thing to give the parts of the tree away since you are giving away a part of its soul ... and since it is a family member well... you got the idea.

Well, it looks like everything has a price, even ones soul.

ok its 01:10 AM here in greece and i just got my daily dose of humor after reading ths topic,
so i would like to wish you all a good night!!!

Let me know if you need help Aaron!!!

Good night Andreas.

That made me laugh also great story!

we'll see how that goes, he might be able to do it himself or with his brother's help. He had told me his brother is the one who knows more about figs.

Good luck with getting free cuttings, he just made a quick $200. He sees gold in them black figs. I think he knows more about figs than what we give him credit. Good luck, I actually hope he does well, especially if this is a new variety and tastes great. It is worth every penny if this is the case.

Wow, guys, what a continuation to the story! LOL for sure.
I should give him a call and ask about a 'special' price!

The figs taste good though, and I believe they are unifera.
