Is this a dumb question?

I was out planting elderberries this morning. And although I'm trying to plant them in orderly rows I'm thinking of it, over all, as a thicket... because berries grow in thickets. Right?

So, what do figs grow in? Thickets? Patches? Groves? Orchards? Beds?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Figs grow in pots or in orchards, and some here even keep them planted so closely and pruned to make hedges and fig fences.  They don't grow well in patches or thickets because the most vigorous will shade the rest, and they don't like shade.

No questions is dumb .

I wouldn't plant in a patch or thicket, makes it harder to harvest as well, plus think about how elderberries stain.

Agree with Chivas, no thicket unless you have a need to crawl through one :)

Did I miss something?  Is this about Elderberries or figs?

I believe if memory serves correct in some of the old readings i read the word Orchards was used
that is if memory serves me correctly.

And an orchard takes into account the height and width of the tree, so pretty much 20' from each other all the way around.  We tweak that by selective pruning and gifting cuttings to members, right?
