is this a fig tree??? newbie

was given two trees and told they were figs....all excited and got them in the ground and am to the fifth year and no signs of figs....the bigger is about 10 ft tall now and probably at least as wide....i'm in charlotte, nc area...haven't fertilized them...only watered them the first year or two after planting....in the spring the get long fuzzy growths that i haven't read about being on fig trees....they started with heart shaped fuzzy leaves...then have a combo of them and heart shaped with a lobe on one side...now this year are getting some with lobes on both sides three in total....also this year i'm getting other plants coming up all over in the vicinity....leaves are fuzzy...bark of tree is tannish to grayish in places with sort of ring looking places around it....not really a main trunk but a lot of trunks to it....did i just mow around weed trees of some sort for five years?

also, the first three years i did mulch the trees with grass clippings a bit...not sure if it would have any bearing on the no figs or not

Definitely not a fig tree. Sorry I don't know what it is. Thought i tmight be a Mulbery, but you would know that by now and Mulberry doesn't have fuzzy leaves, neither do figs

Man!
Those are not fig trees. You should invite the person who joked on you to dig them out now. It is good though you have not waited until the trunks would get one foot in diameter.

any other suggestions what these might be?...

Looks like a male paper mulberry to me, don't feel bad Barry I had to search. http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/trees/brpa.html

yupper....i was looking at the same thing....hmm...do they ever grow berries?...haha

exactly!...i'm thinking we're in the right area.....where's the chainsaw?

With paper mulberry, you'll need to dig the tree and all of its major roots out.  You'll also need to pull volunteers out in the coming years, it is a noxious/invasive weed and each of those tassles is capable of producing dozens of new trees.

First 2 pic. are apple tree. When was this photos taken.

Man what a bummer. All those years invested and not at all what you thought they were.
